Joshua B. Smith
Joshua Brewster Smith (February 9, 1801 – June 17, 1860) was an American politician from New York. Life He was the son of State Senator Joshua Smith (1763–1845) and Deborah Smith (1771–1809), and was born and died at the family estate in the Smithtown section of Hauppauge. He married Mary Rogers (1808–1878), and they had seven children, six of whom died in infancy. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Suffolk Co.) in 1839 and 1843. He was a member of the New York State Senate (2nd D.) from 1844 to 1847, sitting in the 67th, 68th, 69th and 70th New York State Legislatures. Joshua Smith (July 27, 1763 – April 12, 1845) was an American politician from New York. Life He was the son of Joshua Smith (1732–1814), and Hannah (Smith) Smith (1742–1793), and was born and died at the family estate in the Smithtown section of Hauppauge. On December 23, 1784, he married Alma Blydenburgh (died 1790). On October 19, 1793, he married Ruth Smith (1769–1797), and they had two children. On April 4, 1798, he married Deborah Smith (1771–1809), and they had three children, among them State Senator Joshua B. Smith (1801–1860). Joshua Smith was a member of the New York State Assembly (Suffolk Co.) in 1794, 1795, 1796, 1796–97, 1798–99 and 1825. He was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1821. Morgan's governorship, in Albany. John Hunter (August 4, 1778 – September 12, 1852) was an American businessman and politician from New York. Life He was born on August 4, 1778, the son of auctioneer Robert Hunter (–1800) and Ruth ( Breck) Hunter (–1840). He had two sisters, Elizabeth ( Hunter) Ludlow (wife of Gabriel Verplank Ludlow, nephew of George Duncan Ludlow) and Ruth ( Hunter) McEvers (wife of James McEvers, business partner of William Bayard Jr.). His father had emigrated from County Armagh in Northern Ireland to New York. After his father's death, his mother married Lt. Gov. John Broome (under Governors Morgan Lewis and Daniel D. Smithtown is a town in Suffolk County, New York on the North Shore of Long Island. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. The population was 116,296 at the 2020 Census. The census-designated place (CDP) of Smithtown lies within the town's borders. History Smithtown, originally known as "Smithfield", was first settled circa 1665. Local legend has it that, after rescuing a Native American chief's abducted daughter, Richard Smith was told that the chief would grant title to all of the land Smith could encircle in one day "on a bull". Smith chose to ride the bull on the longest day of the year ( summer solstice), to enable him to ride longer "in one day". The land he acquired in this way is said to approximate the current town's location.
