Joshua A. Leach
Joshua A. "Josh" Leach (May 8, 1843 – June 28, 1919) was an American locomotive worker and trade union functionary. He is best remembered as the founder of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen (B of LF) in 1873 and head of that organization from 1873 to 1876. Traveling to Terre Haute, Indiana, on behalf of the firemen's order in February 1875, Leach inspired the 19-year-old Eugene V. Debs to become active in the organization, leading to his election as Secretary-Treasurer in 1880 and starting him on a career as a trade union organizer. Biography Early years Joshua A. Sedalia, Missouri
Sedalia is a city located approximately south of the Missouri River and, as the county seat of Pettis County, Missouri, United States, it is the principal city of the Sedalia Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 21,387. Sedalia is also the location of the Missouri State Fair and the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival. U.S. Routes 50 and 65 intersect in the city. History Indigenous peoples lived along the Missouri River and its tributaries for thousands of years before European contact. Historians believe the entire area around Sedalia was long occupied by the Osage (among historical American Indian tribes). When the land was first settled by European Americans, bands of Shawnee, who had migrated from east of the Mississippi River, lived in the vicinity of Sedalia. Richard "Dick" Reinhardt (March 25, 1927 – ) is an American journalist, author, and historian whose books and articles have focused mainly on the American west, especially San Francisco and California. He also authored ''The Ashes of Smyrna, a'' novel set during the Greco-Turkish war following World War I. Reinhardt taught journalism at the University of California, Berkeley for two decades and has served on the boards of many civic and historic preservation organizations in the Bay Area. Early life and education Reinhardt is the only child of Emil Charles Henry Reinhardt (1896-1974) and Eloise Rathbone Reinhardt (1903-1982).
