Joshua A. Fogel
Joshua A. Fogel (; born 1950) is an American-Canadian Sinologist, historian, and translator who specializes in the history of modern China, especially on the cultural and political relations between China and Japan. He has held a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair at York University in Toronto since 2005. Before that he taught at Harvard University (1981-1988) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (1989-2005). Biography Born in Brooklyn, New York, Fogel graduated from Berkeley High School in 1968, after winning the Berkeley yoyo championship (boys' division) in early 1965. His father David Fogel was a criminologist (PhD, UC Berkeley) and his mother Muriel Fogel (née Finkelstein) was a homemaker and later a teacher in the Head Start Program in Chicago's inner city. He did his undergraduate education in Chinese history (under the guidance of Philip Kuhn) at University of Chicago, graduating in 1972 with honors. Kanzō Uchiyama
was the proprietor of the Uchiyama Bookstore, whose frequent visitors were both Chinese and Japanese intellectuals before World War II. Uchiyama was a Christian. Early life Kanzo Uchiyama was born in 1885, in the village of Yoshii in Shitsuki District, Okayama. At the age of 12, he was sent out for his apprenticeship to Osaka. He worked for 10 years for a merchant family in Kyoto. At the age of 27, Uchiyama became a Christian. Shanghai and the Uchiyama Bookstore At age 28, Kanzo moved to Shanghai, along with his wife Miki, as the overseas representative of Daigaku Megusuri Santendo (a pharmaceutical company). Zhou Shuren (25 September 1881 – 19 October 1936), better known by his pen name Lu Xun (or Lu Sun; ; Wade–Giles: Lu Hsün), was a Chinese writer, essayist, poet, and literary critic. He was a leading figure of modern Chinese literature. Writing in vernacular Chinese and classical Chinese, he was a short story writer, editor, translator, literary critic, essayist, poet, and designer. In the 1930s, he became the titular head of the League of Left-Wing Writers in Shanghai during republican era China (1912-1949). The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), located in Princeton, New Jersey, in the United States, is an independent center for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry.
