Joshua Bates (educator)
Joshua Bates (March 20, 1776 – January 14, 1854) was an American educator and clergyman. He was the third president of Middlebury College. Early life Born in Cohasset, Massachusetts, he was the son of Zealous and Abigail Bates. Bates graduated from Harvard College in 1800. He became a special student in divinity at Phillips Academy, serving as well as an instructor at Phillips Andover Academy. He was licensed to preach by the Andover Association in 1802. Minister at First Church in Dedham Call From 1803 to 1818 he was minister at the First Church and Parish in Dedham, Massachusetts. As the years went on, the mental and physical condition of Bate's predecessor, Rev. Jason Haven, continued to decline. He was frequently so beset with fevers, migraines, and coughing spells that he could not get out of bed. Joshua Bates (financier)
Joshua Bates (October 10, 1788 – September 24, 1864) was an American international financier who divided his life between the United States and the United Kingdom. Early life Bates was born in Commercial St., Weymouth, Massachusetts on October 10, 1788. He was the son of Col. Joshua Bates (1755–1804), who fought in the American Revolutionary War, and Tirzah (née Pratt) Bates (1764–1841). After his father's death in 1804, his mother remarried to Ebenezer Hunt (1760–1832) in 1808. His sister, Nancy Bates, was married to Capt. Warren Weston, the mother of abolitionist Maria Weston Chapman (who Bates paid for her education in London). His paternal grandparents were Abraham Bates and Sarah (née Tower) Bates. Joshua Hall Bates
Joshua Hall Bates (March 5, 1817 – July 26, 1908) was a lawyer, politician, and Ohio militia general in service to the Union during the early part of the American Civil War. He was a leading recruiter and organizer of many of the first regiments of Ohio troops who volunteered after President Abraham Lincoln's call to arms in the spring of 1861. Birth and early years Bates was born on March 5, 1817, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father was physician George Bates who was a friend of Andrew Jackson, and mother was Eliza Hall. He graduated from the United States Military Academy on July 1, 1837, and was breveted as a second lieutenant in the artillery. He subsequently served five years in the Regular army, including spending time in Florida in 1837-38 during the Seminole Wars. Joshua Bates School
The Joshua Bates School is a historic school building at 731 Harrison Avenue in the South End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. The -story Romanesque Revival brick building was designed by Arthur H. Vinal and built in 1884. It was named for financier and major benefactor of the Boston Public Library Joshua Bates. The school was closed in 1975 as a consequence of court-ordered desegregation actions. It was rehabilitated and adapted for use as artists' studios in 2003. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The original sea wall for the South End can still be seen on the Harrison Avenue side of its school yard. American poet James Hercules Sutton attended this school from 1947 to 1951. Josh Bates (speedway Rider)
Josh Bates (born 1 February 1996) is a British speedway rider. Early career Born in Barnsley, Bates had never been on any type of motorbike until the beginning of 2010, when he got his first 125cc speedway bike. After a few months of practicing on this he was ready for a 250cc, which he got in June 2010. After a few more months of practice he entered the 2011 250cc British Championship, where he finished 4th overall. As well as competing in the British championship he rode in the amateur summer championship at Scunthorpe which he won and he also competed in the 250cc world championship in Sweden. Career In January 2012, he started riding a 500cc for the first time, soon after he was offered a team place by the Mildenhall Fen Tigers. He suffered a broken arm in a crash in August 2012, but made a successful return from injury and helped the Fen Tigers complete the National League "Grand Slam" that year.
