Josephine Herman
Josephine Aumea Herman is a Cook Islands physician and public servant. Since June 2018 she has served as Secretary of Health in the Cook Islands government. A physician with a research PhD, Herman studied medicine in Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea and at the University of Auckland. Her doctoral advisors were Shanthi Ameratunga and Rod Jackson. She is a volunteer with the organization DAISI, Doctors Assisting in South-Pacific Islands, and is vice-chair of Pacific Heads of Health. In her official capacity she has been responsible for coordinating the government's response to the 2019 outbreak of dengue fever on the islands. She has spoken of the need to preserve Cook Islands Māori. Shanthi Neranjana Ameratunga is a New Zealand public health academic. As of September 2018 she is currently a full professor at the University of Auckland. Academic career After a 2005 PhD titled '' 'Disability following car crashes: an epidemiological investigation' '' at the University of Auckland, supervised by Robyn Norton and Rod Jackson, Ameratunga joined the staff, rising to full professor. Rod Jackson (epidemiologist)
Rodney Thornton Jackson (born 1954) is a New Zealand medically trained epidemiologist who has had lead roles in publicly funded research focussing on systems to effectively identify risk factors in the epidemiology of chronic diseases, in particular cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This involved linking large cohort studies to regional and national electronic health databases and enabling the generation of new risk-prevention equations using web-based tools, such as the PREDICT model, to implement, monitor and improve risk assessment and management guidelines. Research on asthma in which Jackson participated influenced decisions made by the New Zealand Ministry of Health, and he has contributed to public debate on dietary risk factors for heart attacks and strokes. 2019 Cook Islands Dengue Fever Outbreak
The Cook Islands Dengue Fever Outbreak refers to the Dengue fever outbreak in the Cook Islands beginning sometime in January 2019, declared an outbreak after seven cases were detected with varying stages. The Ministry of Health stated one case was allegedly from French Polynesia. This was relatively new, as the last dengue fever outbreak was in 2009; this specific serotype of DENV-1 in 2007. Initial cases were restricted to Rarotonga and Aitutaki, but in August 2020 a case was reported on Pukapuka. The Pukapuka outbreak was brought under control in October 2020 after a mosquito eradication campaign, and the entire outbreak was declared over in early November 2020. There were a total of 380 probable or confirmed cases (6 in Aitutaki, 5 in Pukapuka, and the rest on Rarotonga), 77 hospitalisations, and no deaths. Cook Islands Māori is an Eastern Polynesian language that is the official language of the Cook Islands. Cook Islands Māori is closely related to New Zealand Māori, but is a distinct language in its own right. Anne Herman, sometimes Anne Herman-Fua, is a Cook Islands public servant. She was named Secretary of Internal Affairs in 2018. She is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington, from which she received a degree in economics and commercial law, and the University of the South Pacific, from which she received an MBA, and has passed much of her career in the banking industry. Henry Puna
Henry Tuakeu Puna (born 29 July 1949) is a Cook Islands politician, and the current secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum. He was Prime Minister of the Cook Islands from November 2010 to October 2020. Since 2006 he has been leader of the Cook Islands Party. Puna was elected to the Parliament of the Cook Islands at the 2005 Manihiki by-election. He lost his seat at the 2006 election, but regained it in the CIP victory at the 2010 election which saw him elected prime minister. During his time as prime minister, he held various ministerial portfolios, including Foreign affairs, Marine Resources, and Energy. In June 2020 Puna announced his intention to stand down as prime minister in September to compete for the role of secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum.
