General Joseph Yorke, 1st Baron Dover Order of the Bath, KB, Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, PC (24 June 1724 – 2 December 1792), styled The Honourable Joseph Yorke until 1761 and The Honourable Sir Joseph Yorke between 1761 and 1788, was a British soldier, diplomat and Whig (British political faction), Whig politician. Background Yorke was the third son of Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke, by Margaret, daughter of Charles Cocks. Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl of Hardwicke, Charles Yorke and James Yorke (bishop), James Yorke were his brothers. Career Yorke was commissioned an ensign in the Coldstream Guards, 2nd Regiment of Foot Guards on 25 April 1741, and was promoted to lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards, 1st Regiment of Foot Guards on 24 April 1743. Yorke served in the War of the Austrian Succession as an aide-de-camp to the Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, Duke of Cumberland, and fought in the Battle of Fontenoy on 11 May 1745. Joseph Sydney Yorke
Admiral Sir Joseph Sydney Yorke KCB (6 June 1768 – 5 May 1831) was an officer of the Royal Navy. As a junior officer he saw action at the Battle of the Saintes in April 1782 during the American Revolutionary War. He commanded at the defeat of the Dutch fleet in August 1795 during the French Revolutionary Wars and went on to be First Naval Lord during the closing stages of the Napoleonic Wars. Family and early life Yorke was born in Great Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, on 6 June 1768, the second son, by his second marriage, of the politician Charles Yorke. He joined the navy at the age of 11, becoming a midshipman aboard , then under the command of Sir Charles Douglas, on 15 February 1780. He followed Douglas to his next command, , which flew the flag of Admiral George Rodney. Yorke was then present at Rodney's victory over François Joseph Paul de Grasse at the Battle of the Saintes from 9 to 12 April 1782. Joseph Yorke (MP)
Joseph Yorke (11 January 1807 – 4 February 1889), was a British Member of Parliament. Yorke was the son of Joseph Yorke and Catherine, daughter of James Cocks and sister of Charles Cocks, 1st Baron Somers. His grandfather the Right Reverend James Yorke was the fifth son of Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke. He was returned to parliament as one of two representatives for Reigate in 1831, a seat he held until the following year. He later served as High Sheriff of Gloucestershire between 1844 and 1845. Yorke married Frances Antonia, daughter of Reginald Pole-Carew, in 1834. They lived at Forthampton Court in Gloucestershire. Yorke died on 4 February 1889, aged 82. His wife only survived him by three weeks and died on 27 February of the same year. Their son John Yorke was a Conservative politician.
