Joseph Wilson Baines
Joseph Wilson Baines (January 24, 1846 – November 18, 1906) was Secretary of State of Texas and a member of the Texas state legislature. Baines was born in Mount Lebanon, Louisiana, and his family moved to Anderson, Texas when he was four. He was a son of George Washington Baines. He studied at Baylor University. In 1867 he moved to Collin County, Texas, where he studied law under James W. Throckmorton. Baines was involved as owner and publisher of multiple papers in McKinney, Texas. From 1883–1887, Baines was the Secretary of State of Texas. Later, starting in 1903, he served one term in the Texas House of Representatives, being succeeded by his future son-in-law Samuel Ealy Johnson Jr. Baines married Ruth Ament Huffman of Collin County in 1896. Der Stadt Friedhof (the city cemetery) is a pioneer cemetery established in 1846 along Barons Creek on the corner of East Schubert Street and Lee Street, in Fredericksburg, Texas. It is the oldest known cemetery within Fredericksburg and is the final resting place for many of the original German colonists who arrived when John O. Meusebach opened up the area to settlement. Fredericksburg (german: Friedrichsberg) is the seat of Gillespie County, in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 Census, this city had a population of 10,530. Fredericksburg was founded in 1846 and named after Prince Frederick of Prussia. Old-time German residents often referred to Fredericksburg as Fritztown, a nickname that is still used in some businesses. It is approximately eighty miles west from Greater Austin. This city is also notable as the home of Texas German, a dialect spoken by the first generations of German settlers who initially refused to learn English.
