Joseph Wilkie
Joseph Wilkie (30 August 1828 – 10 December 1875) was an English music merchant and politician. In 1850 with John Webster, he co-founded Wilkie & Webster, a music warehouse in Collins Street, Melbourne, which eventually became Allans Music after George Allan became the sole proprietor. Wilkie served as an early member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1857 to 1861, representing the districts of West Bourke and Polwarth & South Grenville. In 1871, he was declared a lunatic, and restrained at the mental asylum in Cremorne before being returned to England, where he died in 1875. West Bourke (sometimes Bourke West) was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria from 1856 to 1904. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history, it adopted a left-leaning approach from 1949. ''The Argus''s main competitor was David Syme's more liberal-minded newspaper, ''The Age''. History The newspaper was originally owned by William Kerr, who was also Melbourne's town clerk from 1851–1856 and had been a journalist at the ''Sydney Gazette'' before moving to Melbourne in 1839 to work on John Pascoe Fawkner's newspaper, the '' Port Phillip Patriot''. Mark Last King
Mark Last King (5 February 1809 - 13 February 1879) was an English-Australian actor and politician. King was born in London, England as Mark Last, where he was apprenticed into the silk trade and then worked as a silk mercer in his own firm in Winchester Street. He migrated to Australia in 1838, arriving in Melbourne and working in the timber industry on the Clarence River in New South Wales for a short period. He then became an actor under the stage name of Morton King, performing variously in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne, largely in Shakespearean plays. Edmund Finn described King as having been in 1848 "believed to be unrivalled in his line on this side of the Equator". He subsequently adopted "King" as his legal surname on account of his success under that name. King began managing the Queen's Theatre in Melbourne in 1848 and leased the theatre in conjunction with Charles Frederick Young in 1850-51, around which time he substantially retired from acting. The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in the Australian state of Victoria. Founded in 1852, it is a superior court of common law and equity, with unlimited and inherent jurisdiction within the state. The Supreme Court comprises two divisions: the Trial Division, which oversees its original jurisdiction, and the Court of Appeal, which deals with its appellate jurisdiction, and is frequently referred to as a court in its own right. The ''Newcastle Chronicle and Hunter River District News'' (also published as the ''Newcastle Chronicle'') was a weekly English language newspaper published in Newcastle, New South Wales. History The newspaper was first published in 1858. It was originally published weekly but was later published more frequently, moving to biweekly and then triweekly editions. From 1866 to 1876 it was published as the ''Newcastle Chronicle''. The paper ceased publication in 1876, with the commencement of '' The Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners Advocate''.
