Joseph W. Holden
Joseph W. Holden (1844–1875) was a North Carolina politician in the nineteenth century. He was the son of William Woods Holden. During the American Civil War, Holden served in the Confederate States Army and was captured by Union forces at Roanoke Island. In 1865, his father handed over to him the editorship of the '' North Carolina Standard''. A Republican, he was elected in 1868 to the North Carolina House of Representatives from Wake County. Holden served as Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives while his party controlled the state legislature in 1868-1870, but he resigned before the end of his term. In 1868, Holden was also a delegate to the Republican National Convention. In 1870, Holden lost a close race in a special election to the United States House of Representatives, the result of which he unsuccessfully contested. The North Carolina General Assembly of 18681869 met in Raleigh from November 16, 1868 to April 12, 1869 with a special session from July 1, 1868 to August 24, 1868. This was the first assembly to meet after the approval of the new Constitution of North Carolina in 1868. As prescribed in this constitution, the assembly consisted of the 120 members in the North Carolina House of Representatives and 43 senators in the North Carolina Senate elected by the voters on August 6, 1868. Holden, formerly known as General Motors-Holden, was an Australian subsidiary company of General Motors. It was an Australian automobile manufacturer, importer, and exporter which sold cars under its own marque in Australia. In its last three years, it switched entirely to importing cars. It was headquartered in Port Melbourne, with major industrial operations in the states of South Australia and Victoria. The 164-year-old company ceased trading at the end of 2020.
