Joseph Toole (British Politician)
Joseph Kemp Toole (May 12, 1851 – March 11, 1929) was a Democratic politician from Montana. He served as the first and fourth Governor of Montana. Biography Toole was born in Savannah, Missouri and attended public school in St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1868, he graduated from the Western Military Institute in New Castle, Kentucky with honors. He moved to Helena, Montana in 1870; studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1871 and commenced practice in Helena. Toole was district attorney of the third judicial district of Montana (1872–1876), and a member of the Montana Territorial House of Representatives (1879-1881), and member and president of the Montana Territorial Council (1881–1883). He married Lily Rosecrans, daughter of General William Rosecrans, in 1890 and they had three children. Edwin Norris (24 October 1795 – 10 December 1872) was a British philologist, linguist and intrepid orientalist who wrote or compiled numerous works on the languages of Asia and Africa. His best-known works are his uncompleted ''Assyrian Dictionary'' and his translation and annotation of the three plays of the Cornish ''Ordinalia''. Description Norris was born in Taunton, Somerset, England, on 24 October 1795 and served as a Clerk for the East India House and was also an assistant secretary in the Royal Asiatic Society during the 1830s. He translated and annotated the Cornish language manuscript from the Middle Ages known as the 'three plays of the Ordinalia' which is one of the most important relics of the Celtic dialect of Cornish (published in 1859 by the Oxford University Press as ''Ancient Cornish Drama''): it is one of the more recognized aspects of his work. 1889 Montana Gubernatorial Election
The 1889 Montana gubernatorial election took place on October 1, 1889. This was the first gubernatorial election in Montana. Democratic candidate Joseph Toole narrowly beat Republican candidate Thomas C. Power. Toole was the only Democrat elected for Montana's six executive offices. Toole was sworn in on November 8, 1889, and his term ended January 2, 1893. Toole would be elected again in 1900 and 1904. He resigned near the end of his third term due to ill health. He is the longest served Governor of Montana, at 11 years, and the only Governor elected to nonconsecutive terms.
