Joseph Thomson (explorer)
Joseph Thomson (14 February 1858 – 2 August 1895) was a British geologist and explorer who played an important part in the Scramble for Africa. Thomson's gazelle and Thomson's Falls, Nyahururu are named after him. Excelling as an explorer rather than an exact scientist, he avoided confrontations among his porters or with indigenous peoples, neither killing any native nor losing any of his men to violence. His motto is often quoted to be ''"He who goes gently, goes safely; he who goes safely, goes far."'' Early life Born in Penpont, Dumfriesshire, he was apprenticed into his father's stone-masonry and quarrying business. He developed a keen amateur interest in geology and botany, which eventually led to his formal education at the University of Edinburgh, studying under Archibald Geikie and Thomas Henry Huxley. Joe Thomson
Joseph McGeachy Thomson (6 May 1948 – 12 May 2018) was a Scottish lawyer and academic. He was Regius Professor of Law at the University of Glasgow and a member of the Scottish Law Commission. Early life Thomson was born in Campbeltown and attended the independent Keil School in Dumbarton. He then studied at the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated LLB in 1970 and was awarded the Lord President Cooper Memorial Prize as the outstanding LLB honours graduate. Career Following his graduation, Thomson was appointed lecturer at the University of Birmingham, moving in 1974 to King's College London. In 1984, he became Professor of Law at the University of Strathclyde, and in 1991 was appointed to the Regius Chair in Law at the School of Law of the University of Glasgow. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1996, and was President of the Society of Public Teachers of Law (now the Society of Legal Scholars) in 2000–2001. Joe Thomson (footballer)
Joseph Alexander Thomson (born 14 January 1997) is a Scottish professional footballer, who plays as a midfielder for NIFL Premiership side Larne. Thomson started his senior career at Celtic and he has played on loan at Dumbarton, Livingston, two spells at Queen of the South, Dunfermline Athletic and Derry City. Thomson has also been capped for Scotland at every age level from under-15 to under-21. Personal life Thomson was born in Paisley and played for Gleniffer Thistle Boys Club. He was a youth signing with Rangers before switching to Celtic at under-12 level. He attended Williamwood High School then the Celtic school project at St Ninian's High School, Kirkintilloch.
