Joseph Spence (28 April 1699 – 20 August 1768) was a historian, literary scholar and anecdotist, most famous for his collection of anecdotes (published in 1820) that are an invaluable resource for historians of 18th-century English literature (Augustan literature). Early life Spence was born on 28 April 1699, at Kingsclere, Hampshire, the son of Joseph (Rector of Winnal in Winchester and Precentor of Winchester Cathedral) and Mirabella (née Collier, granddaughter of Sir Thomas Lunsford). In 1709, Spence attended school in Mortimer, near his birthplace, and later attended Eton College and then Winchester College. Spence matriculated to Magdalen Hall, Oxford on 11 April 1717, but did not go up until admitted as scholar or probationary fellow at New College on 22 April 1720. On 30 April 1722, he received a full fellowship, taking his Bachelor of Arts degree on 9 March 1724 and Master of Arts on 2 November 1727. Spence was ordained in the Oxford diocese on 5 June 1726. Joseph Arthur Francis Spence is the current Master of Dulwich College. He was previously Headmaster of Oakham School and Master in College at Eton College. Early life Spence was born on 18 December 1959. He was educated at St Philip's School, a grammar school in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, and at Salesian College, Battersea, a Roman Catholic school in Battersea, London. He studied modern history and politics at the University of Reading, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. He then undertook postgraduate research at Birkbeck College, University of London, completing his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 1991. His doctoral thesis was titled "''The philosophy of Irish Toryism, 1833-52: a study of reactions to liberal reformism in Ireland in the generation between the first Reform Act and the Famine: with especial reference to expressions of national feeling among Protestant ascendancy''". Joe Spence (footballer, Born 1898)
Joseph Waters Spence (15 December 1898 – 31 December 1966) was an English footballer. Manchester United purchased Spence from Scotswood in March 1919. His first game for the club came on 30 August 1919 against Derby County, at the start of the first Football League season after the First World War. He scored 168 goals and made 510 appearances for Manchester United; at the time of his departure in 1933, both were club records. He was eventually overtaken by Jack Rowley as the club's top goalscorer in 1952, while his appearances record stood until November 1964, when he was surpassed by Bill Foulkes One of United's few true stars between the wars, Spence's wing play made "Give it to Joe" the most commonly heard terrace chant during his 14 years at Old Trafford. His first season brought 14 goals in 32 First Division games, and in his best season at the club, 1927-28 season, he scored 24 goals; 22 in the league and two in the FA Cup. Joseph Lown Spence (13 October 1925 – December 2009) was an English footballer who played as a central defender in the Football League for York City. Career A former England Schools' player, and son of Manchester United and England player Joe Spence, Spence started his football career with Chesterfield in January 1947. He moved to Buxton in July 1949, after not making a single appearance at Chesterfield. Spence moved on to York City in July 1950. He was a virtual ever-present at the club during the 1951–52 and 1952–53 seasons.
