Joseph Russell (shipbuilder)
Joseph Russell (August 17, 1786 – March 10, 1855) was a Scottish-born businessman and shipbuilder in New Brunswick, Canada. He was born in Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire, the son of Thomas Russell. He joined the Royal Navy at a young age. In 1819, he married Ann Agnes Hunter at Chatham, New Brunswick. Russell owned a number of buildings in Chatham, including a hotel. He helped establish the Chatham Fire Company in 1824. In 1827, he began building ships. In 1831, a fire destroyed several of his buildings and, in 1832, he purchased a shipyard in Chatham from Francis Peabody. In 1839, he sold that property to Joseph Cunard and moved his operation to Beaubears Island. Russell hired John Harley as his shipbuilder and George Burchill as general manager for his shipyard. In 1837, with other businessman, he made an unsuccessful attempt to establish the Bank of Miramichi. Russell served as overseer of the poor for Chatham and also later for Nelson parish. Joseph Russell (1800 – April 24, 1875) was an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative from New York's 12th congressional district from 1845 to 1847 and again from 1851 to 1853. Early life Russell was born in Warrensburg, New York in 1800. Career Russell became active in several businesses, including lumbering and part-ownership of the Warrensburg House Hotel. Russell was also a founder of Warrensburg's Masonic Lodge. Political career A Democrat, Russell served as Town Supervisor in 1830, 1835 and 1840. He was Warren County Sheriff from November 1834 to November 1837, and served in the New York State Assembly in 1840. Congress Russell was elected to the 29th Congress (March 4, 1845 – March 3, 1847). Joseph Russell (October 1, 1868 – December 14, 1925) was a Toronto businessman and politician. The eldest son of John Russell, who was a brick maker and stone cutter, Joseph Russell was a brick manufacturer owning the brickworks at 1308 Queen Street East at Alton Avenue. The Persuasions
The Persuasions are an American a cappella group that began singing together in Brooklyn, New York in the mid-1960s. The Persuasions were formed in Brooklyn in 1962, singing a cappella under corner streetlights and in subway corridors. Their style combined gospel, soul, early rock and jazz into melodic five-part harmonies. Since being discovered by Frank Zappa, The Persuasions have recorded 23 albums to date. Career The Persuasions appeared on such public affairs television shows as ''Inside Bedford-Stuyvesant'' on WNEW-TV and '' Like It Is'' on WABC-TV in 1968. Frank Zappa was responsible for The Persuasions' first LP, ''Acappella''. He heard The Persuasions singing over the phone from a New Jersey record shop known as Stan's Square Records.
