Joseph Ngolepus
Joseph Ngolepus (born 10 April 1975) is a Kenyan former marathon runner who won the 2001 Berlin Marathon, and finished third at the 2003 London Marathon. He also won the 2003 CPC Loop Den Haag half marathon, the 2004 Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon, the 2006 Madrid Marathon, and the 2008 half marathon. Personal life Ngolepus comes from the same region of Kenya as Tegla Loroupe. He has four children. Career Ngolepus started training in 1997 alongside Tegla Loroupe. He ran his first marathon in 1999, in a time of 2:16. In 2000, he came fourth at the Rotterdam Marathon in a time of 2:08:49. Ngolepus entered the 2001 Berlin Marathon as a pacemaker for fellow Kenyans Willy Cheruiyot Kipkirui and William Kiplagat. After of the race, he decided to try and race for the victory instead. William Kiplagat
William Kiplagat (born June 21, 1972) is a long-distance runner from Kenya. He ran his personal best of 2:06:50 hours in the 1999 Amsterdam Marathon. He finished eighth at the 2007 World Championships. He won the Portugal Half Marathon in 2004. In 2009 he finished third in the Frankfurt Marathon with a fast time (2:07:05 hours), even though he was quoted as saying he is now more like a coach than a runner. The 2007–2008 Kenyan crisis was a violent political, economic, and humanitarian crisis that erupted in Kenya after former President Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner of the presidential election held on December 27, 2007. Supporters of Kibaki's main opponent in that election, Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement, alleged electoral manipulation. This position was widely confirmed by international observers, as being perpetrated by both parties in the election. Even the head of the electoral commission himself confirmed that he did not know who had won the elections despite announcing the incumbent as president. In part due to the ethnic and geographic diversity of Kenyan politics, no singular narrative can explain the reaction of opposition supporters to the announcement of Kibaki's swearing-in, which was done on December 30, 2007, in the evening.
