Joseph Monteith (29 March 1852 – 10 Oct 1911) DL, JP, of Carstairs, County Lanark, Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Knight of Malta, was Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Lanark, Scotland. Family He was the son of Robert Monteith, DL, JP, of Carstairs, by Wilhelmina Anne, daughter of Joseph Mellish of Blythe, Nottinghamshire. On 13 October 1874 he married Florence Catharine Mary Herbert (17 April 1850 – 23 Jan 1900), daughter of John Arthur Edward Herbert and the Hon. Augusta Charlotte Elizabeth Hall of Llanarth Court at Llanarth, Monmouthshire. The children from this marriage were: *Major Henry Monteith, b. Aug 1876; Major in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry; k.a. Maratha Light Infantry
The Maratha Light Infantry is a light infantry regiment of the Indian Army. It traces its lineage to the Bombay Sepoys, raised in 1768, making it the most senior light infantry regiment in the Indian Army. The class composition of the regiment was and is primarily formed by Maratha recruits from the former Maratha Empire. The men are mostly drawn from all over the state of Maharashtra, with some percentage from Marathi-speaking areas of Karnataka including Coorg. The regimental centre has been in Belgaum, Karnataka, since 1922, which was part of the Bombay Presidency at that time. The battle cry of Maratha Light Infantry is, ''"Bola Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Ki Jai (Say Victory To King Shivaji)"''. Carstairs House, also known as Monteith House, is a country house south-west of Carstairs South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The house is protected as a category A listed building. History Carstairs House was designed by the Edinburgh architect William Burn and built for Henry Monteith MP between 1821 and 1823. South Wales Borderers
The South Wales Borderers was a line infantry regiment of the British Army in existence for 280 years. It came into existence in England in 1689, as Sir Edward Dering's Regiment of Foot, and afterwards had a variety of names and headquarters. In 1782, it became the 24th Regiment of Foot, and had its depot in Warwickshire. Based at Brecon from 1873, the regiment recruited from the border counties of Brecknockshire, Monmouthshire, and Herefordshire. It was not called the South Wales Borderers until the Childers Reforms of 1881. The regiment served in a great many conflicts, including the American War of Independence, various conflicts in India, the Zulu War, Second Boer War, and World War I and World War II.
