Joseph Mitchell (city Manager)
Joseph McDowell Mitchell (March 25, 1922 – March 26, 1993) was a local official who served as city manager of Newburgh, New York, from 1960 to 1963. During his tenure there—a period known as the "Battle of Newburgh"—he introduced a wide-ranging reform plan aiming to scale back and regulate the provision of welfare in the city. Though only a small part of his plan was implemented due to opposition from the state government and successive court injunctions against it, his efforts garnered him national fame, attracting the praise of conservative figures such as Barry Goldwater and the condemnation of moderates and liberals, and gave him a historical legacy as a pioneer of workfare policies. OzAsia Festival, or simply OzAsia, is an Asia-focused arts festival in South Australia, presented by the Adelaide Festival Centre for two weeks in late October to early November each year. It features theatre, dance, music, film and visual arts from across Asia as well as outdoor events and food stalls. In some years it has focused on specific regions or countries in Asia. Since 2017, the festival has included the Lucky Dumpling Market, comprising numerous food stalls set up along the river bank. Joseph Mitchell (engineer)
Joseph Mitchell (1803 – 26 November 1883) was a Scottish civil engineer. Life Joseph Mitchell was born on 3 November 1803 in Forres, the son of John Mitchell, a civil engineer. The family moved to Inverness in 1810 where Mitchell attended Inverness Royal Academy. He continued his studies in Aberdeen. In 1820 he went to work on the construction of the Caledonian Canal under an apprenticeship to Thomas Telford. From 1824 until his retirement in 1867 Mitchell held the post of Inspector of Highland Roads and Bridges. From 1828 he also acted as engineer for the Scottish Fisheries Board. He carried out surveys for the railways and was involved in the construction of much of the rail network in the Highlands, including the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway. Joseph Reynolds Mitchell (February 27, 1935 – October 11, 2011) was an American heir and philanthropist; one of the two nephews of Margaret Mitchell, author of ''Gone with the Wind''; and the last family member to control the Mitchell Estate. Inheritance Upon Margaret's death on August 16, 1949, her two nephews Eugene Mitchell (April 6, 1931 - August 8, 2007) and Joseph Mitchell inherited $500 each from her estate. Mitchell was fourteen years old at the time and later stated he was in his thirties before he read ''Gone with the Wind''. John R. Marsh, Margaret's husband, gained the rights to the estate upon her death. When Marsh died in 1952, the rights passed to Margaret's brother Stephens Mitchell, and then when he died the rights passed to Eugene and Joseph. When Mitchell and brother Eugene inherited the estate, it was worth multi-millions. Mitchell was not a public figure, however, and stayed out of the limelight that came with the inheritance. Joseph Earl Cherry Mitchell (22 July 1840 – 22 October 1897) was an English-born Australian politician and businessman. He was born in Cheshire to shipbuilder Richard Mitchell and Margaret Cherry. He was his father's apprentice when they arrived in New South Wales in 1859. He then established himself in Newtown as a coal merchant, subsequently becoming a successful figure in the coal industry. In 1866 he married Charlotte Harrison at Bowral; they had eight children. He was a Methodist. Mitchell was elected four times to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Business career Mitchell began as a coal merchant and did much to popularise coal from the Western coalfields around Lithgow. He later acquired interests in collieries and shipping, including a major interest in both the South Bulli Mine and the Bellambi Colliery.
