Joseph Michaels
Joseph Michaels was an American soccer player. He made three appearances for United States men's national soccer team between 1937 and 1947. Michaels first played for the national team in a 7-3 loss to Mexico on September 19, 1937. His second game was another blowout loss, 5-1, to Mexico six days later. The U.S. did not play an international game for nearly ten years. In 1947, Michaels club team, Ponta Delgada S.C. won both the National Challenge Cup and National Amateur Cup. Based on these result, the U.S. Soccer Federation selected Ponta Delgada to represent the United States at the 1947 NAFC Championship. The United States men's national soccer team (USMNT) represents the United States in men's international soccer competitions. The team is controlled by the United States Soccer Federation and is a member of FIFA and CONCACAF. The Mexico national football team () represents Mexico in international football and is governed by the Mexican Football Federation (). It competes as a member of CONCACAF. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, commonly known as the U.S. Open Cup (USOC), is a knockout cup competition in men's soccer in the United States of America. It is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in that country. The 2023 U.S. Open Cup competition is currently underway, with the qualifying stages taking place from September 17 - December 18, 2022. The National Amateur Cup, also known as the USASA Amateur Cup, is an American soccer competition open to all amateur teams affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation through United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA). In 1923, U.S. Soccer established the National Amateur Cup in response to the growing number of teams entering the open National Challenge Cup (now known as the U.S. Open Cup). The 1923 competition was played through the semifinals, however the tournament was never completed due to inclement weather. 1947 NAFC Championship
The 1947 NAFC Championship was the first association football championship for the North American Football Confederation (NAFC). The first tournament came soon after the founding of the NAFC. Cuba hosted the tournament which included the host national team, Mexico and the United States. Rather than forming a team for the competition, the United States Football Soccer Federation chose to send Ponta Delgada S.C., an amateur team from Fall River, Massachusetts. Ponta Delgada had won both the National Challenge Cup and National Amateur Cup, but was unable to compete with Mexico and Cuba. Mexico easily handled both the U.S. and Cuba, defeating the first 5–0 and the second 3–1. Cuba took second place with a 5–2 victory over the United States. The Cuba national football team ( es, Selección de fútbol de Cuba) represents Cuba in men's international football and it is controlled by the Football Association of Cuba. Nicknamed Leones del Caribe (''Lions of Caribbean''), the team represents all three FIFA, Caribbean Football Union and Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF).
