Joseph John Martin
Joseph John Martin (November 21, 1833 – December 18, 1900) was a Republican U.S. Congressman from North Carolina, United States between 1879 and 1881. Born in Williamston in Martin County, North Carolina, Martin attended Williamston Academy and then studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1859 and became the prosecuting attorney of Martin County. He was elected solicitor for North Carolina's second judicial district in 1868 and was re-elected to that post in 1874. Martin was a member of the Republican party and a delegate to the 1876 Republican National Convention. In 1878, Martin was elected to the U.S. House, defeating incumbent Democrat Jesse Johnson Yeates. Although Martin served most of his two-year term, Yeates successfully contested the election and unseated Martin on January 29, 1881, two months before the expiration of Martin's term. Tarboro, North Carolina
Tarboro is a town located in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Rocky Mount Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the town had a population of 10,721. It is the county seat of Edgecombe County. The town is on the opposite bank of the Tar River from Princeville. It is also part of the Rocky Mount-Wilson-Roanoke Rapids CSA. Jesse Johnson Yeates (May 29, 1829 – September 5, 1892) was a Democratic U.S. Congressman from North Carolina between 1875 and 1881. Life and career Born in Hertford County, North Carolina, near Murfreesboro, Yeates attended private schools and then Emory and Henry College in Virginia. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1855, practicing law in Murfreesboro. He became the prosecuting attorney of Hertford County in 1855, serving until 1860, when he was named solicitor of the first judicial district. Also in 1860, Yeates was elected to a term in the North Carolina House of Commons, serving for two years. He was a major in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War and was a member of the council of Governor Jonathan Worth.
