Joseph Itotoh
Joseph Odidi Itotoh (18 May 1941 – 27 September 2006) was a Nigerian trade union leader and politician. Born in Uromi, Itotoh attended the Salvation Army School, then the Central Catholic School in Zaria, and the Annunciation Catholic College in Irrua. He became a schoolteacher, working first at the Pilgrim Baptist Grammar School in Ewohimi, then as principal at the Edo National College in Iguobazuwa, followed by a stint at the Immaculate Conception College in Benin City. From 1978 to 1981, he studied at the University of Ibadan, from which he received a doctorate. Itotoh joined the Nigeria Union of Teachers, and served as its president from 1980 until 1986, and from 1981 also as president of the All-Africa Teachers' Organisation. In 1986, he became president of the World Confederation of Organisations of the Teaching Profession. Edo, commonly known as Edo State, is a state located in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Bendel State
The Mid-Western Region was a division of Nigeria from 1963 to 1991, from 1976 being known as the Bendel state. It was formed in June 1963 from Benin and Delta provinces of the Western Region, and its capital was Benin City. It was renamed a province in 1966, and in 1967 when the other provinces were divided into several states, it remained territorially intact, becoming a state. During the Nigerian Civil War, the Biafran forces invaded the new Mid-Western state, en route to Lagos, in an attempt to force a quick end to the war. While under Biafran occupation, the state was declared the "Republic of Benin". As Nigerian forces retook the region, the republic collapsed only a day after the declaration when Nigerian troops captured Benin City. In 1976 the state was renamed Bendel. Uromi,the real word is Urọnmhun meaning "this is my abode ",or my enclave is a city located in north-eastern Esan, a sub -ethnic group of the Benin in Edo state, Nigeria. At various points in Uromi's history, the city and people have been an important part of the Benin Empire. Benin City
