Joseph Herbert (actor)
Joseph William Herbert (27 November 1863–18 February 1923) was a British-born American director, silent-film actor, singer and dramatist notable for being the first person to play Ko-Ko in America in a pirate production of Gilbert and Sullivan's ''The Mikado'' (1885) before joining D'Oyly Carte Opera Company touring companies across America (1885-1890). Early career Herbert was born in Liverpool in 1863 to Irish parents and emigrated to America in 1876 aged 13, living in Chicago where, during his college days, he joined the local Church Choir Company as an amateur chorister. He deputised for a professional comedian who failed to show to play the Lord Chancellor in the company’s production of ''Iolanthe'' and when C. D. Hess reformed the company as the Acme Opera Company and sent it on the road (1884) as a professional musical stock company, Herbert went with it. Ruddigore
''Ruddigore; or, The Witch's Curse'', originally called ''Ruddygore'', is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It is one of the Savoy Operas and the tenth of fourteen comic operas written together by Gilbert and Sullivan. It was first performed by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company at the Savoy Theatre in London on 22 January 1887. The first night was not altogether a success, as critics and the audience felt that ''Ruddygore'' (as it was originally spelled) did not measure up to its predecessor, '' The Mikado''. After some changes, including respelling the title, it achieved a run of 288 performances. The piece was profitable, and the reviews were not all bad. Edward Jakobowski (17 April 1856 – 29 April 1929) was an English composer, especially of musical theatre, best known for writing the hit comic opera ''Erminie''. Life and career Jakobowski was born in Islington, London, the only son of Israel Jakobowski (born c. 1819), a salesman dealing in stationery and cigars, and his wife Fanny (born c. 1834), who were both Viennese of Polish extraction. He had an older sister, Helena (born c. 1855). At age six, he moved to Vienna, Austria, where he lived for some 15 years and was given a musical education. ''Baron Trenck'' is a comic opera in three acts loosely based on the life of Baron Franz von der Trenck. The original German-language work was composed by Felix Albini to a libretto by Alfred Maria Willner and Robert Bodanzky and premiered at the Stadttheater in Leipzig in 1908. The English version, adapted by Frederick Franklin Schrader and Henry Blossom, ran for just 43 performances at the Strand Theatre in London in 1911. Sally In Our Alley (1902 Musical)
''Sally in Our Alley'' was a 1902 Broadway musical comedy show. It helped Marie Cahill reach stardom and popularized songs. The title refers to the popular saying that developed from the British song " Sally in Our Alley". The show helped popularize the song "Under the Bamboo Tree". George V. Hobart wrote the musical and its song lyrics. Ludwig Engländer wrote the music for the show. Interpolations of songs by J. Rosamond Johnson, George Walker, and Bert Williams were included in the show. The first performance of the show was delayed a couple days because of a dressing room row that occurred after Irene Bently was assigned a tent rather than a bedroom like Marie Cahill. Three New York City playhouses named Wallack's Theatre played an important part in the history of American theater, as the successive homes of the Repertory theatre, stock company managed by actors James William Wallack, James W. Wallack and his son, Lester Wallack. During its 35-year lifetime, from 1852 to 1887, that company developed and held a reputation as the best theater company in the country. The Fortune Teller (operetta)
''The Fortune Teller'' is an operetta in three acts written by Victor Herbert, with a libretto by Harry B. Smith. After a brief tryout in Toronto, it premiered on Broadway on September 26, 1898 at Wallack's Theatre and ran for 40 performances. Star Alice Nielsen and many of the original company travelled to London where the piece opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre on April 9, 1901, running for 88 performances. It was revived in New York on November 4, 1929 at Jolson's 59th Street Theatre and ran for 16 performances. This was Herbert's sixth operetta, which he wrote for Nielsen and her new Alice Nielsen Opera Company.
