Joseph Gilder
Joseph Benson Gilder (June 29, 1858 – December 9, 1936) was an American editor. He was the brother of Richard Watson Gilder and Jeannette Leonard Gilder and the explorer William Henry Gilder. Biography Gilde was the son of the clergyman William Henry Gilder (clergyman), William Henry Gilder. He was born in Flushing, New York, studied two years at the United States Naval Academy, and for some time was engaged in newspaper work in Newark, New Jersey, Newark, N. J. and New York City. In 1881, with his sister, he founded ''The Critic'', of which he was coeditor until 1906 when publication of ''The Critic'' ended. Gilder was literary advisor to the Century Company (1895–1902); helped organize the University Settlement House of New York; in 1902–04 was United States dispatch agent at London, England, London; and in 1910–11 was editor of the New York The New York Times, ''Times'' "Review of Books". Richard Watson Gilder
Richard Watson Gilder (February 8, 1844 – November 19, 1909) was an American poet and editor. Life and career Gilder was born on February 8, 1844 at Bordentown, New Jersey. He was the son of Jane (Nutt) Gilder and the Rev. William Henry Gilder, and educated at his father's seminary in Flushing, Queens. There he learned to set type and published the ''St. Thomas Register''. Gilder later studied law at Philadelphia. During the American Civil War, he enlisted in the state's Emergency Volunteer Militia as a private in Landis' Philadelphia Battery at the time of the Robert E. Lee's 1863 invasion of Pennsylvania. After the Confederates were defeated in the Battle of Gettysburg, Gilder and his unit were mustered out in August. The death of his father, while serving as chaplain of the Fortieth New York Volunteers, obliged him to give up the study of the law.
