Joseph Fay (artist)
Joseph Fay (6 August 1812, Cologne - 27 July 1875, Düsseldorf) was a German painter and illustrator; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Life and work From 1833 to 1844, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf; initially with Karl Ferdinand Sohn. From 1841 to 1842, he attended the master classes taught by Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow. In 1840, together with Lorenz Clasen, Heinrich Mücke and Hermann Plüddemann, he won a competition sponsored by the , to create a fresco depicting the early history of the Germans, up to the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, at the . This fresco, executed in 1843, proved to be his artistic breakthrough and received praise from the poet, Wolfgang Müller von Königswinter. It was destroyed during World War II. He went to Paris in 1844, where he studied history painting with Paul Delaroche. After returning to Düsseldorf, he produced no major works. Malkasten (English: "Paintbox") is a progressive German artists' association, founded in Düsseldorf in 1848, during the March Revolution. Since 1867, their headquarters have been in the Pempelfort district. History During the unrest in 1848, artists also began to take part in political discussions. In August of that year, the held an event called the "Fest der Deutschen Einheit" (Festival for German Unity). Many artists and sculptors associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule took part in its artistic design. On the night of the celebration, they decided to establish an artist's association which, a few days later, they named "Malkasten", at the suggestion of Karl Hübner. An animal painter is an artist who specialises in (or is known for their skill in) the portrayal of animals. The ''OED'' dates the first express use of the term "animal painter" to the mid-18th century: by English physician, naturalist and writer John Berkenhout (1726-1791). From the early 20th century, ''wildlife artist'' became a more usual term for contemporary animal painters. Albert Arnz
Albert Arnz (24 January 1832 – 9 September 1914) was a German landscape painter of the Düsseldorf school. Biography Albert Arnz was the son of Maria Catharina Carolina and Heinrich Arnz (1785–1854), a well-known bookseller and printer (he owned Arnz & Comp.). He studied painting from 1854 to 1860 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, there two of his teachers were Andreas and Oswald Achenbach. The latter married Arnz's sister Julie (born 1827), and with him he traveled to Italy a number of times. Another brother in law, the husband of his sister Marie Anna Fernandine (born 1829), was the Düsseldorfer painter Albert Flamm. Karl Ferdinand Wimar (also known as Charles Wimar and Carl Wimar; 20 February 1828 – 28 November 1862), was a German-American painter who concentrated on Native Americans in the West and the great herds of buffalo. He is known for an early painting of a colonial incident: his ''The Abduction of Boone's Daughter by the Indians'' (1855–56), a depiction of the 1776 capture near Boonesborough, Kentucky of Jemima Boone and two other girls by a Cherokee-Shawnee raiding party. Johann Baptist Wilhelm August Weber (10 January 1817, in Frankfurt am Main – 11 September 1873, in Düsseldorf) was a German painter; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Life and work He began studying landscape painting in his hometown, with Carl Heinrich Rosenkranz (1801-1851), then moved to Darmstadt in 1835, where he continued his studies with the court painter, Johann Heinrich Schilbach. This was followed by a study trip to Switzerland. Upon returning to Frankfurt, he studied at the Städelschule until 1838.
