Joseph Davilmar Théodore
Joseph Davilmar Théodore (March 25, 1847 – January 13, 1917) was President of Haiti from 7 November 1914 to 22 February 1915. Born in the town of Ennery in the northern half of the country, he began his career in the military, and organized the cacao farmers of the north in the revolt against President Oreste Zamor. His inability to pay the farmers as he had promised for participating in the rebellion soon led to his resignation in favor of Jean Vilbrun Guillaume Sam. Jérémie
Jérémie ( ht, Jeremi) is a commune and capital city of the Grand'Anse department in Haiti. It had a population of about 31,000 at the 2003 census. It is relatively isolated from the rest of the country. The Grande-Anse River flows near the city. Jérémie is called ''the city of the poets'' because of the numerous writers, poets, and historians born there. History During 1762, French General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas was born here. He is mostly known for fighting under Napoleon in Italy and Egypt. In 1964, during the Jérémie Vespers, the Haitian army and the ''Tonton Macoutes'' massacred 27 people in Jérémie. Cacos (military Group)
In Haitian history, Cacos were bodies of armed men, originally drawn from the country's enslaved population, who came to wield power in the mountainous regions of Haiti following the victory of the Haitian Revolution in 1804. The nickname "cacos" was derived from local terms for the red-plumed Hispaniolan trogon because the insurgents "used to hide, like the bird of the same name, under the leaves so as to come unexpectedly upon and attack their enemy." Resistance to the U.S. occupation, 1915–1934 The United States invaded Haiti–– ostensibly to restore order in the wake of the assassination of Haiti's president Vilbrun Guillaume Sam–– on 28 July 1915, and maintained a force of Marines to occupy the island until 1934. Rosalvo Bobo
Pierre François Joseph Benoit Rosalvo Bobo (1874–1929), known as Rosalvo Bobo, was a Haitian politician, and a leader of the rebel faction known as the Cacos. In March of 1915 he started and led a rebellion against the government of President Jean Vilbrun Guillaume Sam. With the rebellion going against him Guillaume Sam ordered the arrest and murder of his political opponents, and was himself killed by a mob in retaliation on 27 July 1915. This led to a breakdown of order and widespread violence in the capitol of Port-au-Prince. In response the United States landed U.S. Marines at Port-au-Prince on 28 July 1915, beginning the 1915 occupation of Haiti. U.S. Admiral William B. Haitian Navy
The Armed Forces of Haiti (french: Forces Armées d'Haïti—FAd'H), consisted of the Haitian Army, Haitian Navy (at times), the Haitian Air Force, Haitian Coast Guard, (ANI) and some police forces (Port-au-Prince Police). The Army was always the dominant service with the others serving primarily in a support role. The name of Haiti's military was changed from the Garde d'Haiti to the Forces Armées d'Haïti—FAd'H in 1958 during the rule of François Duvalier. After years of military interference in politics, including dozens of military coups, Haiti disbanded its military in 1995. Sylvain Salnave
Sylvain Salnave (February 6, 1827 – January 15, 1870) was a Haitian general who served as the President of Haïti from 1867 to 1869. He was elected president after he led the overthrow of President Fabre Geffrard. During his term there were constant civil wars between the various factions. Eventually, he was overthrown in a coup by his eventual successor Nissage Saget, and Salnave was tried for treason and executed. Early life and career Salnave, a light-skinned mulatto, was born in Cap-Haïtien in 1827. "Salnave, Sylvain". He enlisted in the Haitian Army in 1850. He was captain of cavalry when Fabre Geffrard overthrew Faustin Soulouque in January 1859, and was rewarded for his aid with the rank of major. In 1861 Salnave was bitter in his denunciation of Geffrard for what he called Geffrard's subserviency in the matter of the occupation of the Dominican territory by Spain.
