Joseph Conrad Square
Joseph Conrad Square is a small triangular square at Columbus Avenue and Beach Street, near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, California. History The park was dedicated in 1971 by then Mayor Joseph Alioto and was named for sailor and novelist Joseph Conrad. The project had been initiated by Wanda Tomczykowska, president of the Polish Arts and Culture Foundation. Consideration was given to placing in the park the San Francisco Maritime Museum's copy of Jacob Epstein Sir Jacob Epstein (10 November 1880 – 21 August 1959) was an American-British sculptor who helped pioneer modern sculpture. Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, California
Fisherman's Wharf is a neighborhood and popular tourist attraction in San Francisco, California. It roughly encompasses the northern waterfront area of San Francisco from Ghirardelli Square or Van Ness Avenue east to Pier 35 or Kearny Street. The F Market streetcar runs through the area, the Powell-Hyde cable car line runs to Aquatic Park, at the edge of Fisherman's Wharf, and the Powell-Mason cable car line runs a few blocks away. History San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf gets its name and neighborhood characteristics from the city's early days of the mid to later 1800s when Italian immigrant fishermen came to the city to take advantage of the influx of population due to the gold rush. Joseph Alioto
Joseph Lawrence Alioto (February 12, 1916 – January 29, 1998) was an American politician who served as the 36th mayor of San Francisco, California, from 1968 to 1976. Biography Alioto was born in San Francisco in 1916. His father, Giuseppe Alioto, was a Sicilian immigrant who owned and operated several fish processing companies. His mother, Domenica Mae Lazio, was born in San Francisco. His parents met on a fishing boat while escaping the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Education He attended Sacred Heart High School (presently Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory). He graduated with honors from St. Mary's College, Moraga, California in 1937 and from law school at The Catholic University of America with honors in 1940. Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, ; 3 December 1857 – 3 August 1924) was a Poles in the United Kingdom#19th century, Polish-British novelist and short story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language; though he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he came to be regarded a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote novels and stories, many in nautical settings, that depict crises of human individuality in the midst of what he saw as an indifferent, inscrutable and amoral world. Wanda Tomczykowska
Wanda Tomczykowska (August 29, 1921 – March 2, 2010) was the founder of The Polish Arts and Culture Foundation, San Francisco, California. Between 1966 and 2002 she was the organisation's president. Early life Tomczykowska was born in Bytom, Poland, to Leon Krawczyk and Paulina Fichna. She had two brothers, Stanislaw and Boleslaw, who were enslaved by the Nazis during World War II in the coal mines of Silesia and died in middle age from the health effects of that experience. Family Leon was a well-known actor in the Bytom Theatre and a close confidant of Wojciech Korfanty during the 1921 Silesian Uprising. At the outbreak of World War II Leon, who was on the Nazis' wanted list, went into hiding. In the war's first weeks, the Nazis sent Wanda to a labor camp and unsuccessfully tried to use her as a hostage to uncover her father’s whereabouts. Sir Jacob Epstein (10 November 1880 – 21 August 1959) was an American-British sculptor who helped pioneer modern sculpture. He was born in the United States, and moved to Europe in 1902, becoming a British subject in 1911. He often produced controversial works which challenged ideas on what was appropriate subject matter for public artworks. He also made paintings and drawings, and often exhibited his work. Early life and education Epstein's parents, Max and Mary Epstein, were Polish Jewish refugees, living on New York's Lower East Side. His family was middle-class, and he was the third of five children. His interest in drawing came from long periods of illness; as a child he suffered from pleurisy.
