Joe Burke (baseball Executive)
Joseph Roy Burke (December 8, 1923 – May 12, 1992) was an American front office executive in Major League Baseball who served as general manager (baseball), general manager or club president of the Kansas City Royals for almost 18 years during the most successful period in that expansion team's early history. Burke was executive vice president and general manager of the Royals from the middle of the 1974 in baseball, 1974 season through October 1981 in baseball, 1981. He then served as club president until his death on May 12, 1992. During his tenure, Burke was general manager of the Royals' first American League championship team, the 1980 in baseball, 1980 edition, then was president of the 1985 in baseball, 1985 Royals, who won the franchise's first 1985 World Series, World Series title. Joseph Burke (politician)
Joseph Burke (November 12, 1853 – after 1888) was a land surveyor and political figure in Manitoba. He represented St. Francois Xavier from 1886 to 1888 in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Conservative. He was born in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec, the son of Walter Burke, a native of Ireland, and Mary Comeford, and was educated at Ste. Anne's College, at Montmagny Business College and at McGill University. Burke qualified as a provincial land surveyor for Quebec in 1874. He served as a lieutenant in the Quebec militia during the Fenian raids. From 1877 to 1879, he was director of surveys for Richelieu County. Burke moved to Manitoba in 1880, where he spent three years subdividing townships. He then opened his own business in St. Charles. Joe Burk
Joseph William Burk (January 19, 1914 – January 13, 2008) was an American oarsman and coach. Raised in Delanco Township, New Jersey, he graduated from Moorestown High School in 1930. At the University of Pennsylvania, Burk rowed in the varsity boats. After graduating in 1934, he began racing in the single scull (1x), a one-man boat. Burk won 46 consecutive races in the single scull from 1937 to 1940, inclusive. He was the U.S. and Canadian champion for those four years. In 1938, he won the Diamond Challenge Sculls at the Henley Royal Regatta when he set a Henley course record of 8:02, which was to stand for 27 years. He won Diamonds again in 1939, beating Roger Verey in the final. He became known as the "world's greatest oarsman", and at the end of the 1939 season, Burk was voted the James E. Joseph Burke (March 2, 1888 – January 31, 1990) was the longest-tenured judge in the history of the Illinois Appellate Court.Chicago Sun-Times Article, February 1, 1990, pg. 70, Section: News Judge Burke was born in Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland in 1888, son of Patrick Burke. His family emigrated to America in 1895, going through Ellis Island and then on to Chicago where they settled on the Near West Side. Burke worked as a newsboy, selling the Chicago Daily News for eight years. He graduated from DePaul Law School in 1909 and began practicing law in 1911. In 1917 he enlisted in the United States Army. After the war, he organized the American Legion's Blackhawk Post and was its first commander. Burke was elected to the municipal court in 1922. In 1930 he was appointed a circuit judge, and was permanently assigned to the Illinois Appellate Court in 1939. Joseph Burke (12 June 1812 in Bristol, England – 23 January 1873 in Harrisonville, USA) was a collector of plants and animals for Edward Smith-Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby, Lord Derby. 1839–1840 Burke was employed as a gardener for Lord Derby, an enthusiastic natural history collector with his own menagerie at Prescot, Lancashire. In 1839 Lord Derby commissioned Karl Ludwig Philipp Zeyher, Karl Zeyher to collect plants and animals in southern Africa, delegating Burke to organise the expedition. Burke left London on the vessel "Joanna" in December 1839 and arrived in Cape Town in March 1840. From here he went on to "Vygekraal" (about 3 km SE of Table Bay), the home of Rev. Fry and an agent of Lord Derby. Here he arranged for a wagon and oxen to transport him, and set out on 23 May to Uitenhage where he planned to meet up with Karl Zeyher for a joint expedition to the interior.
