Joseph-Breitbach-Preis (Joseph Breitbach Prize) is a literary prize awarded by the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz (Academy of Sciences and Literature of Mainz), in Germany and the Joseph Breitbach Foundation. Established in 1998, the prize is worth 50,000 euros and is awarded annually in Koblenz, birthplace of writer Joseph Breitbach (1903–1980), for whom the prize is named. Akademie Der Wissenschaften Und Der Literatur
The Academy of Sciences and Literature (german: Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz, AdW Mainz) is a scientific academy in Mainz, Germany. It was established in 1949 on an initiative of Alfred Döblin. The academy's goal is to support science and literature, and in doing so to help preserve and promote culture. Members The academy has members in three classes: mathematics and natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, literature and music. Each class has up to 50 full and 50 corresponding members. Notable members have included Niels Bohr, Otto Hahn, Konrad Lorenz, Halldór Laxness, Heinrich Böll, and Jean-Marie Lehn. Erika Burkart
Erika Burkart (8 February 1922, Aarau – 14 April 2010) was a Swiss writer and poet. She was the recipient of many awards, among them the Conrad-Ferdinand-Meyer-Preis, the Gottfried-Keller-Preis, the Joseph-Breitbach-Preis, and the Wolfgang-Amadeus-Mozart-Preis. She was born in Aarau in 1922 and died in Muri in 2010. Erika Burkart's literary estate is archived in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern. Kurt Flasch
Kurt Flasch (born 12 March 1930, Mainz) is a German philosopher, who works mainly as a historian of medieval thought and of late antiquity. Flasch was professor at the Ruhr University Bochum. Michael Krüger (writer)
Michael Krüger (born 9 December 1943, in Wittgendorf) is a German writer, publisher and translator. Michael Krüger grew up in Berlin. After the graduating he was apprenticed to a publisher and later studied philosophy and literature. From 1962 to 1965 he worked as a bookseller in London. From 1968 Krüger has worked as an editor at the publishing house Carl Hanser Verlag, and was its editor-in-chief from 1986 to 2014. In 1972 he published his first poems, with his first collection, ''Reginapoly'', appearing in 1976 and his first collection of stories ''Was tun: Eine altmodische Geschichte'' (What shall we do: An old-fashioned story) in 1984. Several stories, novels and translations followed. His work has garnered many important accolades including the 1986 Toucan Prize and the 1996 Prix Médicis étranger. Ursula Krechel (born 4 December 1947) is a German writer. Krechel was born in Trier. From 1966 to 1972 she studied German studies, theatre, and art history at the University of Cologne. Marcel Beyer
Marcel Beyer (born 23 November 1965) is a German writer. Life Marcel Beyer was born in Tailfingen, Württemberg, and grew up in Kiel and Neuss. From 1987 to 1991 he studied German language and literature, English studies and literary studies at the University of Siegen; in 1992 he obtained a Magister degree with a work on Friederike Mayröcker. Since 1987, he has developed performance art. From 1989 he published, with Karl Riha, the series ''Vergessene Autoren der Moderne'' (Forgotten Modernist Authors) at the University of Siegen. Friedrich Christian Delius
Friedrich Christian Delius (13 February 1943 – 30 May 2022), also known by his pen name F.C. Delius, was a German novelist. He wrote books about historic events, such as the 1954 FIFA World Cup, and RAF terrorism. Four of his novels were translated into English, including ''The Pears of Ribbeck'' and ''Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman''. His awards include the Georg Büchner Prize of 2011. Wulf Kirsten
Wulf Kirsten (21 June 1934 – 14 December 2022) was a German poet, novelist, and publisher. He is known for his nature poetry and his essays on the history and culture of Saxony. The son of a stonemason, Kirsten was born in Klipphausen, Meissen on 21 June 1934. He worked as salesman, bookkeeper and labourer before graduating from the Workers' and Farmers' College (''Arbeiter- und Bauern-Fakultät'') of Leipzig in 1960, and then completed a teaching degree in German and Russian in 1964. At the same time he worked on a freelance basis for the compilers of the ''Dictionary of the Upper Saxon Dialects'', providing them with more than a thousand words from his own household. After obtaining his degree, he worked briefly as a teacher, and then in 1965 moved to Weimar to work for the Aufbau Verlag publishing house, where he would stay until 1987. Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt
Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt (born 2 May 1928) is a French writer and translator of German origin. Biography Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt was born in Reinbek near Hamburg, into a Jewish family of magistrates converted to Protestantism. His father was an adviser to the Hamburg Court of Appeal until 1933. He was then deported to Theresienstadt where he served as Protestant pastor of "Protestant Jews" deported because of their origin. Georges-Arthur fled Germany in 1938. He took refuge in Italy with his brother, then in France, in a boarding school in Megève. From 1943 to September 1944, he was hidden in Haute-Savoie among farmers, particularly François and Olga Allard, who were honoured on August 6, 2012 as Righteous Among the Nations. Raoul Schrott
Raoul Schrott (born 17 January 1964) is an Austrian poet, writer, literary critic, translator and broadcast personality. Schrott was raised in Tunis where his father served as an Austrian sales representative. He attended the universities of Norwich, Paris, Berlin and Innsbruck. He completed a thesis on "Dada 1921 – 1922 in Tirol". He translated Homer's writings into colloquial German. In 2008 he was appointed Visiting professor by the Free University Berlin. Harald Weinrich
Harald Weinrich (24 September 1927 – 26 February 2022) was a German classical scholar, scholar of Romance philology and philosopher, known for the breadth of his writings. Biography He was emeritus professor of the Collège de France, and held the chair of Romance literature from 1992 to 1998. Weinrich was born in Wismar, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, on 24 September 1927. His doctorate and habilitation were from the University of Münster. He took a founding chair at the new University of Bielefeld in 1968.
