Joseph Benwell Clark (185713 February 1938) was an English painter, etcher, engraver in mezzotint and drypoint, and book illustrator. ''Victorian Painters'' describes Clark as a London painter of rustic subjects. Early life Born at Cerne Abbas, Dorset, Clark was a son of William Henry Clark, linen draper, and his wife Christian Ann Benwell Ellisdon, and was baptized into the Church of England on 24 July 1857. His parents had married at Haggerston, East London, in 1846, and both his grandfathers were drapers. His middle name, Benwell, came from his maternal grandmother, who was Sarah Lovelock Benwell before marrying William Ellisdon. Arthur Mayger Hind (1880–1957) was a British art historian and curator, who usually published as Arthur M. Hind or A. M. Hind. He specialized in old master prints, and was Keeper of the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum until he retired in 1945. Many prints continue to be referred to by the numbers from his catalogue of Italian engravings in the British Museum, a work begun in 1910 and published in expanded form in four volumes in 1948, with another three in 1948. Richard Samuel Chattock
Richard Samuel Chattock (23 August 1825 – 30 January 1906) was an English printmaker, painter and etcher. Biography Chattock was born in Solihull (then in Warwickshire), the third son of Thomas Chattock, a solicitor. After studying at Rugby School, he too entered the legal profession. However, in the late 1850s he began following his interest in art, exhibiting his work in the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. From 1869 to 1891, he exhibited in the Royal Academy of Arts. Chattock often painted rural scenes and architectural subjects. In 1872, he completed his most famous works, sixteen etchings that depict the industrial landscape of the Black Country considered an unusual choice for artists. James Sprent Virtue (18 May 1829 – 29 March 1892) was a British publisher. Early years Born at 26 Ivy Lane, Paternoster Row, in the City of London, EC, J. S. Virtue was the second son of George Virtue, the founder in London of a publishing business, the main feature of which was producing illustrated works. At the age of fourteen, J.S. was apprenticed to his father, and in 1848, when he was 19, he was sent to work in the firm’s New York publishing branch, to expand the United States and Canadian market for its books and journals. ''The Art Journal'' was the most important British 19th-century magazine on art. It was founded in 1839 by Hodgson & Graves, print publishers, 6 Pall Mall, with the title ''Art Union Monthly Journal'' (or ''The Art Union''), the first issue of 750 copies appearing 15 February 1839. It was published in London but its readership was global in reach. History Hodgson & Graves hired Samuel Carter Hall as editor of ''Art Union Monthly Journal'', assisted by James Dafforne.
