Joseph Bendounga
Joseph Bendounga (born 17 March 1954), nicknamed Joe Ben, is a Central African politician. He is known for his eternal opponent of every country's administration since Patasse, which led to him to get arrested several times. Early life and education Bendounga was born on March 17, 1954, in Bocaranga. He studied law at University of Bangui. Political Career 1990 - 2003 Bendounga founded MDREC in 1990. He was then arrested due to political reasons. In 1997, Ange-Félix Patassé appointed Bendounga as the Mayor of Bangui and held it until 2000, when he decided to resign. Upon stepping down as mayor, he joined the opposition by becoming the leader of Collectif démocratique des partis d’opposition (CODEPO). Central African Armed Forces
The Central African Armed Forces (french: Forces armées centrafricaines; FACA) are the armed forces of the Central African Republic and have been barely functional since the outbreak of the civil war in 2012. Today they are among the world's weakest armed forces, dependent on international support to provide security in the country. In recent years the government has struggled to form a unified national army. It consists of the Ground Force (which includes the air service), the gendarmerie, and the National Police. 2023 Central African Constitutional Referendum
A constitutional referendum was held in the Central African Republic on 30 July 2023. Background Incumbent president Faustin-Archange Touadéra's party, the United Hearts Movement, proposed abolishing term limits in 2022, arguing that presidential term limits were uncommon in many neighboring countries. Critics and opposition parties held protests as the reform would allow president Touadéra to run again in 2025 for a third term. President Touadéra installed a 55-member commission (all appointed by him) to draft the proposed changes in August. However, the Constitutional Court ruled the committee unconstitutional and annulled it, stating that a constitutional reform process could not be triggered without consent from the Senate, which at the time had still not been established according to the 2015 constitution. 2020–21 Central African General Election
General elections were held in the Central African Republic on 27 December 2020 to elect the President and National Assembly. A second round of the legislative elections was originally scheduled to take place on 14 February 2021. Voting was not able to take place in many areas of the country that are controlled by armed groups resulting in some Central African media and opposition candidates describing the elections as a farce and fraud. Some 800 of the country's polling stations, 14% of the total, were closed due to violence. During the first round, voting did not take place in 29 of 71 sub-prefectures, while in six others only a partial vote took place before being shut down due to voter intimidation. Catherine Samba-Panza
Catherine Samba-Panza (born 26 June 1954) is a Central African lawyer and politician who served as interim President of the Central African Republic from 2014 to 2016. She was the first woman to hold the post of head of state in that country, as well as the eighth woman in Africa to do so. Prior to becoming head of state, she was Mayor of Bangui from 2013 to 2014.
