Joseph B. Perskie
Joseph B. Perskie (July 20, 1885 – May 29, 1957) was an associate justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1933 to 1947. Perskie was born at the Alliance Colony in Pittsgrove Township, New Jersey on July 20, 1885, the son of Lazar Perskie and Minnie (Levit) Perskie. He moved with his family to Atlantic City, New Jersey when he was 11 years old, and graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1904. He received his law degree in 1907 from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He married Beatrice Maslansky on November 27, 1910. He is the father of David M. Perskie (1913-1969) and Marvin D. Perskie and grandfather of Steven P. Perskie. He resided in Atlantic City and was interred at Beth Kehillah Cemetery in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. The Atlantic County, New Jersey Bar Association sponsors the Vincent S. Haneman-Joseph B. Perskie Scholarship. New Jersey Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of New Jersey is the highest court in the U.S. state of New Jersey. In its current form, the Supreme Court of New Jersey is the final judicial authority on all cases in the state court system, including cases challenging the validity of state laws under the state constitution. It has the sole authority to prescribe and amend court rules and regulate the practice of law, and it is the arbiter and overseer of the decennial legislative redistricting. One of its former members, William J. Brennan Jr., became an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. It has existed in three different forms under the three different state constitutions since the independence of the state in 1776. Prior to 1947, the structure of the judiciary in New Jersey was extremely complex, including Court of Errors and Appeals in the last resort in all causes. The Court of Errors and Appeals was the highest court in the U.S. state of New Jersey from the enactment of the state's 1844 constitution until the enactment of the state's 1947 constitution. The name of the court derived from its function of hearing appeals and correcting previous courts errors in judgment. The court was abolished by the 1947 constitution, and replaced as the state's highest court by the New Jersey Supreme Court. The Alliance Colony was a Jewish agricultural community that was founded on May 10, 1882, in Pittsgrove Township, in Salem County, New Jersey, United States. It was named after the Alliance Israélite Universelle of Paris and was funded by the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society of New York and Philadelphia and The Baron De Hirsch Fund.
