Josef Marais
Joseph Pessach (November 17, 1905, Sir Lowry's Pass Village – April 27, 1978, Los Angeles), better known by his stage name Josef Marais, was a folk-singer from South Africa. Biography Marais left South Africa in the 1920s to study violin and viola in Europe, finally settling in London. He toured as a concert violinist for several years and when he heard that His Master's Voice was eager to record songs in Afrikaans for the South African market, he offered his services. The very successful recordings were heard by the BBC who approached Marais with the request that he translate and perform the songs for British audiences. These broadcasts were heard by the British representative of NBC and Marais was invited to New York in 1939 to do a radio show for NBC. In 1945, he started singing with Rosa de Miranda, a Dutch immigrant with whom he had worked for a few years. Jo Stafford
Jo Elizabeth Stafford (November 12, 1917July 16, 2008) was an American traditional pop music singer, whose career spanned five decades from the late 1930s to the early 1980s. Admired for the purity of her voice, she originally underwent classical training to become an opera singer before following a career in popular music, and by 1955 had achieved more worldwide record sales than any other female artist. Johnnie Ray
John Alvin Ray (January 10, 1927 – February 24, 1990) was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. Highly popular for most of the 1950s, Ray has been cited by critics as a major precursor to what became rock and roll, for his jazz and blues-influenced music, and his animated stage personality. Tony Bennett called Ray the "father of rock and roll", and historians have noted him as a pioneering figure in the development of the genre. Born and raised in Dallas, Oregon, Ray, who was partially deaf, began singing professionally at age fifteen on Portland radio stations. "A-round the Corner (Beneath the Berry Tree)", also titled "Ay-round the Corner (Bee-hind The Bush)" or "A-round the Corner (Be-neath The Berry Tree)", is a traditional popular song adapted by Josef Marais, from the repertoire of Marais and Miranda. The title was first published in February 1952, but an earlier version was registered in August 1940. The most popular version was recorded by Jo Stafford on 10 December 1951 with accompaniment by her partner Paul Weston and the Norman Luboff Choir. It was issued on Columbia 39653 and entered the Billboard chart in March 1952, peaking at number nine, also making number 12 on the ''Cash Box'' chart. A recording by The Weavers and Gordon Jenkins on Decca charted in April and reached number 19. Sir Lowry's Pass Village
Sir Lowry's Pass Village is a town near the base of Sir Lowry's Pass, about 60 km from Cape Town, South Africa. History In 1846 there was a post office, run by a postmistress, Mrs Walters, and six farms in the area. 43 years later the first steam train stopped there in 1890. The railway station later became the Post Office. The waiting room was also used for English Church Services in 1925, as there was no church building at the time. Wild flowers grew in profusion on the mountains and hills around the village and selling them was a major source of income for the villagers in the early 1900s. Today the little village is flanked by up-market residential estates and various wine farms, including Goederverwachting Farm, where it is reported that the Articles of Capitulation for the Battle of Blaauwberg were signed by General Janssens, the Batavian Governor of the Cape.
