Jorma Panula Conducting Competition
The Jorma Panula Conducting Competition, is a music competition for young European conductors held in Vaasa, (Finland). History The first competition, named after the conductor and conducting professor Jorma Panula, was organized in 1999 with the idea of being a platform for young conductors starting their professional careers. The president of the Jury is Jorma Panula and the jury includes several musicians such as Olari Elts, Karsten Witt and Atso Almila. During the competition the contestants conduct the Sinfonia Finlandia and the Vaasa City Orchestra. Winners * 2015 First Prize: Dylan Corlay. A music competition is a public event designed to identify and award outstanding musical ensembles, soloists, composers, conductors and musicologists. Conducting
Conducting is the art of directing a musical performance, such as an orchestral or choral concert. It has been defined as "the art of directing the simultaneous performance of several players or singers by the use of gesture." The primary duties of the conductor are to interpret the score in a way which reflects the specific indications in that score, set the tempo, ensure correct entries by ensemble members, and "shape" the phrasing where appropriate. Jorma Panula
Jorma Juhani Panula (born 10 August 1930) is a Finnish conductor, composer, and teacher of conducting. He has mentored many Finnish conductors, such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Mikko Franck, Sakari Oramo, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Osmo Vänskä and Klaus Mäkelä. Career Panula was born in Kauhajoki. He studied church music and conducting at the Sibelius Academy. His teachers included Leo Funtek, Dean Dixon, Albert Wolff and Franco Ferrara. Apart from conducting, he has composed a wide variety of music. His operas ''Jaakko Ilkka'' and the ''River Opera'' established a new genre called "performance opera", which fused music, visual art and the art of daily life. Panula's other compositions include musicals, church music, a violin concerto, jazz capriccio and numerous pieces of vocal music. Sinfonia (; plural ''sinfonie'') is the Italian word for symphony, from the Latin ''symphonia'', in turn derived from Ancient Greek συμφωνία ''symphōnia'' (agreement or concord of sound), from the prefix σύν (together) and ϕωνή (sound). Risto Joost
Risto Joost (born 22 June 1980) is an Estonian conductor and operatic countertenor. Life Born in Tallinn, Joost has been intensively involved with music since the age of six. He attended the special school for music in Tallinn. From 1986 to 1998 he studied choir conducting at the Tallinn Academy of Music with Anneli Mäeots and from 1998 to 2002 at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Conducting with Kuno Areng, Jüri Alperten and Paul Mägi as well as singing with Uku Joller and Nadja Kurem. In 2002 and 2003 he studied choral conducting with Erwin Ortner and conducting with Leopold Hager at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In spring 2008 he completed his studies at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm under Jorma Panula. Master classes followed with Neeme Järvi and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Olari Elts
Olari Elts (born April 27, 1971 in Tallinn) is an Estonian conductor. He was the principal conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra from 2001 to 2006. He is the founder and director of the contemporary music ensemble NYYD Ensemble. In September 2006 he took up the newly created position of Artistic Advisor of the Orchestre National de Bretagne. He was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra from the beginning of the 2007–2008 season. Also in 2007, he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra.
