Jorge Carrera Andrade Award
The Jorge Carrera Andrade Award ( es, Premio Jorge Carrera Andrade) is a literary award given by the Municipality of Quito, Ecuador to the best poetry book published during the year. It is awarded simultaneously with the Joaquín Gallegos Lara National Fiction Prize, on 1 December of each year. This happens in commemoration of the Day of Quito Interculturality, which takes place as part of the city's founding celebrations. The winners receive a statuette called "Rumiñahui de Oro" (Golden Rumiñawi). Jorge Carrera Andrade
Jorge Carrera Andrade was an Ecuadorian poet, historian, author, and diplomat during the 20th century. He was born in Quito, Ecuador in 1902. He died in 1978. During his life and after his death he has been recognized with Jorge Luis Borges, Vicente Huidobro, Gabriela Mistral, Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz and Cesar Vallejo as one of the most important Latin American poets of the twentieth century. Writing and diplomatic career His writing was published in Aurora Estrada y Ayala's literary magazine, "Proteo" which she started in 1922. Other contributors to the magazine included future Nobel Laureate Gabriela Mistral. From 1928 to 1933 Carrera first experienced traveling in Europe. He served as Ecuadorian Consul in Peru, France, Japan and the United States. Later he became Ambassador to Venezuela, the United Kingdom, Nicaragua, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Miguel Donoso Pareja (July 13, 1931 – March 16, 2015) was an Ecuadorian writer and 2006 Premio Eugenio Espejo Award-winner (Ecuador's National Prize in literature, given by the President of Ecuador). Biography Donoso Pareja's father was Miguel Donoso Moncayo (1896–1971) from Quito and his mother was Leonor Pareja Diezcanseco from Guayaquil. His uncle was the novelist and diplomat Alfredo Pareja Diezcanseco (1908–1993). Beginning in 1951, Donoso Pareja frequented the Guayaquil home of Enrique Gil Gilbert where he engaged with other young poets and writers of the time. In 1962 he joined the Communist Party. In 1963 Donoso Pareja became the head of fundraising of the weekly newspaper ''El Pueblo'' ("The People"), which was the Communist Party's main publication in Guayaquil.
