Jordan Smith (musician)
Jordan Mackenzie Smith (born November 4, 1993) is an American singer, songwriter, and musician from Harlan, Kentucky. Smith began singing in his church choir and continued through his college education at Lee University. In 2015 he gained national recognition when he won season 9 of the singing competition ''The Voice''. During his time on ''The Voice'' he was the show's 1st artist of the season to reach No. 1 in sales of pop songs in the iTunes Store, and set new sales marks on '' Billboard'' charts. In 2022, he represented Kentucky on the ''American Song Contest'' with the song, "Sparrow", finishing 3rd place. Harlan is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Harlan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,745 at the 2010 census, down from 2,081 at the 2000 census. Harlan is one of three Kentucky county seats to share its name with its county, the others being Greenup and Henderson. History Harlan was first settled by Samuel and Chloe Howard in 1796. Wallins Creek is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Harlan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 156 at the 2010 census, when it was still a city, having dropped from 257 at the 2000 census. History Wallins Creek began life as a coal mining town in 1925; the mine was owned by the Wallins Creek Coal Corporation. The Wallins Creek Baptist Church was established in 1855 with 30 members. Wallins Creek is home to the Wallins Elementary School, which has been in use since the 1940s and has won several awards in sports and academics, at one point a bustling coal town, the population has declined significantly since 1990. Geography Wallins Creek is in western Harlan County, in the valley of the Cumberland River. Great Is Thy Faithfulness is a popular Christian hymn written by Thomas Chisholm (songwriter), Thomas Chisholm (1866–1960) with music composed by William M. Runyan (1870–1957) in Baldwin City, Kansas, U.S. The phrase "great is thy faithfulness" comes from the Old Testament Book of Lamentations 3:23. These exact words occur in both the King James Bible and the Revised Standard Version. History Thomas O. Chisholm wrote the poem in 1923 about God's faithfulness over his lifetime. Chisholm sent the song to William Runyan in Kansas, who was affiliated with both the Moody Bible Institute and Hope Publishing Company. Runyan set the poem to music, and it was published that same year by Hope Publishing Company and became popular among church groups. The Biblical lyrics reference Lamentations 3:22-23.
