Joop Klant
Jacobus Johannes (Joop) Klant (1 March 1915 in Warmenhuizen – 26 December 1994 in Amsterdam), was a Dutch economist, novelist and professor of political economy at the University of Amsterdam. Biography His parents were Pieter Klant en Geertje de Moor. He studied economics at the University of Amsterdam. In the late 1930s he broke off his studies to succeed his deceased father, who had been paymaster of the vegetable auction in Warmenhuizen. Later in 1954 he completed his studies in economics. Again twenty years later in 1973, he published his PhD thesis entitled "''Spelregels voor Economen''" ("Rules for Economists"). This methodological treatise attracted much attention and was honored in 1978 with Kluwer Price. After studying economics in Amsterdam, Klant worked as statistician at the National Office for Construction Material in Amsterdam. Arie Pais
Aäron "Arie" Pais (16 April 1930 – 25 June 2022) was a Dutch politician of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and economist. Early life and education Pais was of Jewish descent. Before World War II, he attended from 1942 on his secondary education at gymnasium level at the Jewish Lyceum in Amsterdam. Due to persecutions of the Jewish population during this war, he went into hiding with his family in Barneveld and thus survived the war. After the war, Pais continued his secondary education at the Vossius Gymnasium in Amsterdam between 1945 and 1948, and then studied at the University of Amsterdam where he received his doctorandus degree (equivalent to MSc) in social economics in 1954. After this study, Pais was appointed as a researcher at this university where he subsequently obtained his doctorate (PhD) in economic sciences in 1973. Arnold Heertje
Arnold Heertje (19 February 1934 – 4 April 2020) was a Dutch economist and professor at the University of Amsterdam, writer and columnist. He became more generally known for his opposition to the Betuweroute. Life and career Heertje was born on 19 February 1934 in Breda, the son of Maurits Heertje and Estella Philips. Heertje grew up primarily in Arnhem. Due to their Jewish background, during the Second World War the whole family had to go in hiding after 12 November 1942. The eight-year-old Arnold ended up with a Reformed family in the Haarlemmermeer. Impressed by their faith, he planned to become a Minister (Christianity), minister. Together with his parents he survived the war. After the war he wanted to join the Reformed church, but his mother forbade him. According to his mother, he would not be allowed to choose a church until he was eighteen. Heertje was not only impressed by the faith of people that had hidden him, but also by their poverty. Anton Julius (Ton) Butter (10 January 1920 – 1989) was a Dutch economist, Associate Professor the Department of Economics of the University of Amsterdam and deputy director of SEO Economic Research. Biography Butter was born in Amsterdam and received his MA in economics at the University of Amsterdam, where he started working as research assistant, and later assistant professor and associate professor at the Department of Economics.
