Joo (Korean Name)
Ju (), also spelled Joo or Chu, is a Korean family name and an element in Korean given names. Its meaning differs based on the hanja used to write it. Family name As a family name, Ju may be written with either of two hanja, one meaning "red" (; 붉을 주), and the other meaning "around" (; 두루 주). The former has one ''bon-gwan'' ( Wu Yuan, China), while the latter has four (Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do; Chogye-myeon, Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do; Cheorwon-gun, Gangwonnam-do; and Anui-myeon, Hamyang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do). The 2000 South Korean census found 215,010 people with this family name. Ju Si-gyeong
Ju Sigyeong (, December 22, 1876 – July 27, 1914) was one of the founders of modern Korean linguistics. He was born in Pongsan-gun, Hwanghae-do in 1876. He helped to standardize the Korean language, based on the spelling and grammar of vernacular Korean. Biography Ju Sigyeong was born in Hwanghae Province, in what is now North Korea. He studied Classical Chinese from an early age. In 1887 he moved to Seoul and studied linguistics. In 1896 he found work in the first Hangeul-only newspaper, '' Dongnip Sinmun'', founded by the Korean independence activist Seo Jae-pil. In 1897 Seo Jae-pil was sent into exile to the United States, and Ju Sigyeong left the newspaper. Joo Hee-jung (born February 4, 1977) is a South Korean basketball coach and retired player. His playing career spanned twenty years with four different teams in the Korean Basketball League.
