Jonesboro, Texas
Jonesboro is an unincorporated community in Coryell and Hamilton counties in Central Texas, United States. The Coryell County portion of the community is part of the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The United States Postal Service operates the Jonesboro Post Office. History William L. and David Jones built a steam-powered sawmill and gristmill on the Leon River in 1866. It was first settled sometime after the Civil War and became known as Jones Mill. The local church and Masonic organization shared a large frame building that was built from 1869 to 1873. Its post office was established in 1871, with Charles Pate as postmaster. The community's name was changed to Jonesboro in 1877 and had 350 residents, who were served by two steam-powered gristmills and cotton gins, a sawmill, and three churches in the mid-1880s. Gatesville is a city in and the county seat of Coryell County, Texas, United States. Its population was 16,135 at the 2020 census. The city has five of the nine prisons and state jails for women operated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. State Highway 36 (SH 36) runs from Freeport to Abilene. It was designated as the 36th Division Memorial Highway between Cameron and Sealy by the Texas Legislature in 1985. History SH 36 was originally proposed on November 21, 1917, as a route from Cisco to Waco. On December 20, 1917, this became part of SH 18. On November 20, 1917, an intercounty highway was designated from Goldthwaite to Temple. On January 24, 1918, the intercounty highway extended to Cameron. Stephenville North And South Texas Railway
The Stephenville North & South Texas Railway (SN&ST) was incorporated in Texas on February 4, 1907 by Stephenville and Hamilton business interests. Its original standard gauge 43 mile line was built between Stephenville and Hamilton and completed in late 1907. The first train operated between Stephenville and Hamilton on Christmas Day 1907. Regular service began in January 1908. Four apparently identical wooden depots of a standard design were built at Hamilton, Carlton, Spurlin, and Alexander (where the Texas Central line of the Katy Railroad crossed). The SN&ST shared a union station with its original primary railroad connection, the long established Fort Worth & Rio Grande Railroad at Stephenville.
