Jonathan Wheeler House
The Jonathan Wheeler House is a historic house on North Society Road in Canterbury, Connecticut. Built c. 1760, it has features unusual for its time, including end chimneys and a center-hall plan. The use of brick in this part of rural Connecticut is also unusual for the period. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Description and history The Jonathan Wheeler House is located in a rural setting of northern Canterbury, on the east side of North Society Road about south of the Brooklyn line. It is set near the road, at the southwest corner of an parcel historically associated with it. It is a -story brick structure, with a side gable roof and end chimneys. Its main facade is five bays wide, the center entrance set in a rectangular opening with a seven-light transom window. Canterbury is a town in Windham County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 5,045 at the 2020 census. History The area was settled by English colonists in the 1680s as ''Peagscomsuck''. It consisted mainly of land north of Norwich, south of New Roxbury, Massachusetts (now Woodstock, Connecticut), and west of the Quinebaug River, Peagscomsuck Island, and the Plainfield Settlement. In 1703 this section was officially separated from Plainfield and named The Town of Canterbury. The town's name is a transfer from Canterbury, England. Prudence Crandall's School (1831–1834) In 1832, Prudence Crandall, a schoolteacher raised as a Quaker, stirred controversy when she opened the Canterbury Female Boarding School and admitted black girls as students. The town of Stonington is located in New London County, Connecticut in the state's southeastern corner.
