Jonathan Smith (novelist)
Jonathan Smith (born 1942) is an English novelist, playwright, writer and teacher. A career English teacher, best known for his novels, he has also written many radio plays. Early life and education Smith was born in Gloucestershire to a family of teachers originally from the Rhondda Valley in South Wales. He was educated at Christ College, Brecon and read English at St John's College, Cambridge. Teaching and writing career Smith took up his first teaching job at Loretto School near Edinburgh in Scotland. After a brief stint at Melbourne Grammar School in Australia, he taught at Tonbridge School for the rest of his career and was head of English for 17 years. He published five novels during his teaching career before retiring in 2002 to concentrate on writing. His former pupils at Tonbridge include Sir Anthony Seldon, novelist Vikram Seth, poet Christopher Reid, actor Dan Stevens and musician Kit Hesketh-Harvey. Jonathan M. "Joffa" Smith (1 February 1967 – 26 June 2010) was a British games programmer, best known for his titles for the ZX Spectrum. His games were notable for containing a large number of sprites and parallax scrolling, features which were largely unknown on the Spectrum at the time. His most notable games include ''Cobra'', (which was a license extremely loosely based on a Sylvester Stallone film) one of the first Spectrum games to exhibit full-colour parallax scrolling and his conversion of the arcade game ''Green Beret''. A notable "trademark" of Smith's was his habit of writing his name (with "Jonathan" and "Smith" spelled various ways) as a mirror-image in his games. Jonathan Peter Smith (born 10 November 1955) is an Anglican priest: he was Archdeacon of St Albans from 2008 to 2020. Before becoming archdeacon in 2008, he served as a chaplain and a vicar. Early life and education Smith was born on 10 November 1955. He grew up in East Suffolk. He studied theology at King's College London. He graduated from the university in 1977 with a Bachelor of Divinity (BD) degree and the Associateship of King's College (AKC) qualification. He then undertook teacher training at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in 1978. Jonathan Bayard Smith (February 21, 1742 – June 16, 1812) was an American politician and merchant from Philadelphia who was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Smith served as a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress in 1777 and 1778, where he signed the Articles of Confederation. Early life Smith was born on February 21, 1742, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Mary Harrison and Samuel Smith. His father was a successful mercantile businessman in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, who had moved to Philadelphia. Smith graduated from Princeton in 1760 and joined his father in business. Jonathan Smith (born November 3, 1986) is an American professional stock car racing driver who competed in the NASCAR East Series full-time for three years from 2007 to 2009. In 2010, his most recent season as a driver, Smith ran part-time in the same series. Racing career Smith started racing at the age of five on dirtbikes, by the age of 12 he was racing BMX bicycles, where he was crowned State Champion in his first year. Jonathan Smith (born 28 February 1979) is a former New Zealand rugby league footballer. His position of preference was in the second row. Playing career A junior from the Mangere East Hawks, Smith was a Junior Kiwi in 1998. He was then signed by the Auckland Warriors in 2000. While at the Warriors he played in the Queensland Cup for Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Brisbane Souths due to a feeder agreement between the clubs and also played for the Otahuhu Leopards in the Bartercard Cup. He went on to make seven first grade appearances for the club between 2000 and 2001. Confusingly there was also a Jonathon Smith at the club at the same time, although he did not make any first grade appearances.
