Tokelau
Tokelau (; ; known previously as the Union Islands, and, until 1976, known officially as the Tokelau Islands) is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It consists of three tropical coral atolls: Atafu, Nukunonu, and Fakaofo. They have a combined land area of . The capital rotates yearly among the three atolls. In addition to these three, Swains Island, which forms part of the same archipelago, is the subject of an ongoing territorial dispute; it is currently administered by the United States as part of American Samoa. Tokelau lies north of the Samoan Islands, east of Tuvalu, south of the Phoenix Islands, southwest of the more distant Line Islands, and northwest of the Cook Islands. John Allen (diplomat)
John Allen is a New Zealand public servant. From 2009 to 2014 he served as chief executive of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He was the acting Administrator of Tokelau from 2009 until 2011. Allen had previous worked as chief executive of NZ Post. In April 2009 he was appointed chief executive of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, becoming the first non-diplomat to lead MFAT. His tenure was controversial, with restructuring plans resulting in widespread opposition from staff, and in leaks of MFAT cables to the opposition. In 2014 he was forced to apologise to rape victim Tania Billingsley over his handling of the 2014 Malaysian diplomat indecent assault case. He resigned from the role in November 2014 to take up a role with the New Zealand Racing Board. He was replaced as chief executive by Brook Barrington. Linda Te Puni
Linda Te Puni is a diplomat from New Zealand of Māori heritage. She has served as the High Commissioner to the Cook Islands from 2010 until 2011 and Tuvalu beginning in 2016. She has also been Administrator of Tokelau. Biography Te Puni is a descendant of the Te Ati Awa chief, Honiana Te Puni. Te Puni worked several jobs before becoming a diplomat, including cutting fish in Iceland, as a farmworker in Israel and working in London's pubs. Te Puni joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1987. She has served in places such as Honiara, Samoa, Ottawa, Mexico, Paris, Suva and Wellington. In 2010, Te Puni moved to Rarotonga and she became the first woman to become the New Zealand high commissioner to the Cook Islands. Brook Barrington
Brook Barrington is a New Zealand public servant and former diplomat. He was appointed chief executive of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) in February 2019 and was previously chief executive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). Barrington began his public service career at MFAT in 1990. He had diplomatic postings in Canberra and Brussels and was the Ambassador of New Zealand to Thailand for three years. After leaving MFAT, Barrington held deputy chief executive positions at the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Justice. He returned to MFAT as chief executive in 2015 and was credited with "restoring order" to the department after a "controversial" restructuring process. Ross Ardern
David Ross Ardern (born 28 February 1954) is a New Zealand diplomat and former police officer. He was the Administrator of Tokelau from 2018 to 2022, having previously served as the High Commissioner of New Zealand to Niue from 2014 to 2018, and as Niue's police commissioner from 2005 to 2009. Biography Ardern joined the New Zealand Police in 1974, initially training at the Royal New Zealand Police College at Trentham, and was one of the police officers who carried out the Dawn Raids on Pacific Island families in the 1970s. In his 40-year police career he spent about 20 years in the Criminal Investigation Branch and five years as Matamata–Piako area sub-commander. In 2002 Ardern received a Commissioner's Commendation for his work in the line of duty while investigating a robbery, kidnapping and sexual assault case in 1999.
