Jonathan Dixon (judge)
Jonathan Dixon (July 6, 1839 – May 21, 1906) was an American jurist and Republican party politician from New Jersey. He was an Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court and was the Republican nominee for Governor of New Jersey in 1883. Biography Dixon was born in Liverpool, England on July 6, 1839. His father, also named Jonathan Dixon, came to the United States in 1848 and was followed in 1850 by his family, settling in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers College in 1859 and was admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1862. He moved to Jersey City to practice law in 1865. Dixon was associated with New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Gilbert Collins until 1875, when he was appointed to be a Supreme Court Justice by Governor Joseph D. Bedle. He was subsequently reappointed by Governors Ludlow, Green, Griggs, and Murphy. Franklin Murphy (January 3, 1846February 24, 1920) was an American Republican Party (United States), Republican Party politician, who served as the 31st governor of New Jersey, from 1902–1905. He was the founder of the Murphy Varnish Company in Newark, New Jersey, Newark, New Jersey. Benjamin Franklin Howey (March 17, 1828 – February 6, 1893) was an American lawyer and Republican politician who represented New Jersey's 4th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives for one term from 1883 to 1885. Early life and career Howey was born in Pleasant Meadows, near Swedesboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey. He engaged in business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a flour and grain commission merchant in 1847 and later in quarrying and manufacturing slate. He served as captain of Company G, Thirty-first Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers, from September 3, 1862, to June 26, 1863 and as sheriff of Warren County, New Jersey, from November 13, 1878, to November 15, 1881.
