Jonas Gricius
Jonas Augustino Gricius (5 August 1928 – 1 February 2021) was a Lithuanian cinematographer, known for his work on a number of classical films starting from the late 1950s, including ''Hamlet'', ''The Girl and the Echo'', and '' The Blue Bird''. Biography In 1954 he graduated from the All-Union Institute of Cinematography, a course by Boris Volchek. Hamlet (1964 Film)
''Hamlet'' ( rus, Гамлет, r=Gamlet) is a 1964 film adaptation in Russian of William Shakespeare's play of the same title, based on a translation by Boris Pasternak. It was directed by Grigori Kozintsev and , and stars Innokenty Smoktunovsky as Prince Hamlet. Background Grigori Kozintsev had been a founder member of the Russian avant-garde artist group the Factory of the Eccentric Actor (FEKS), whose ideas were closely related to Dadaism and Futurism. In 1923 he had been planning to perform ''Hamlet'' as a pantomime in the experimental manner of FEKS, but the plan was not put into effect, and Kozintsev's energies shifted into the cinema. However, he returned to the theatre in 1941 with a Leningrad production of ''King Lear''. Then, in 1954 Kozintsev directed a stage production of ''Hamlet'' at the Pushkin Theatre in Leningrad, using Boris Pasternak's translation; this was one of the first Soviet productions of the play in the post-Joseph Stalin era. The Girl and the Echo (russian: Девочка и эхо, Devochka i ekho; alternative title: The Last Day of Vacation, Lithuanian: ''Paskutinė atostogų diena'') is a 1964 Soviet drama film directed by Arūnas Žebriūnas and produced by Lithuanian Film Studios. It is based on a short story ''Echo'' by Yury Nagibin, who also wrote the screenplay. Plot Vika is staying for the last day at her grandfather's, a fisherman. Today her father should come but she does not want to leave. In the morning her grandfather goes to sea to check the nets and Vika wanders along the beach and talks with her rocks-friends. The pensive girl creates a special world of relationships with people and nature. Meanwhile, on the bank the children from the coastal village decide who should be the leader in their crew. ''The Blue Bird'' is a 1976 American-Soviet children's fantasy film directed by George Cukor. The screenplay by Hugh Whitemore, Alfred Hayes, and Aleksei Kapler is based on the 1908 play '' L'Oiseau bleu'' by Maurice Maeterlinck. It was the fifth screen adaptation of the play, following two silent films, the studio's 1940 version starring Shirley Temple, and a 1970 animated feature. It was famous as one of the few cinematic co-productions between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. However unlike prior adaptations the film received little-to-no critical praise and was a flop at the box office.
