Jonas A. Hughston
Jonas Abbott Hughston (1808 – November 10, 1862) was a United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representative from New York. Born in Sidney, New York, Hughston completed preparatory studies. He studied law. He was Admission to the bar in the United States, admitted to the bar in 1839 and commenced practice at Delhi (village), New York, Delhi, New York. He served as district attorney of Delaware County 1842–1845. He resumed the practice of law. Hughston was elected as an Opposition Party (Northern U.S.), Opposition Party candidate to the 34th United States Congress, Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855 – March 3, 1857). He was appointed by President Lincoln marshal of the consular court at Shanghai, China, on March 26, 1862, and served until his death in Shanghai, China, on November 10, 1862. Sidney, New York
Sidney is a town in Delaware County, New York, United States. The population was 5,774 at the 2010 census. The town is at the northwestern corner of the county and contains the village of Sidney. History The town was formed in 1801 from the town of Franklin. On April 7, 1801, the town was named "Sidney" in honor of British naval officer Sir Sidney Smith. Geography The northern town line, marked by the Susquehanna River, is the border of Otsego County, and the western town boundary is the border of Chenango County. The village of Sidney, the main settlement in the town, is at the western end of the town along the Susquehanna River. Interstate 88 runs through the northern side of the town, with access from Exits 9, 10, and 11.
