Jonah (novel)
''Jonah'' (1911) is a novel by Australian writer Louis Stone. Story outline Jonah, a hunchback larrikin, lives in a Sydney slum where he is the leader of the local "Push", a street gang. But his life changes when he becomes father to a son, and he strives to break away from his previous life. Critical reception A reviewer in ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' understood the worth of the novel from its first publication: "In ''Jonah'', Mr. Louis Stone has given us an excellent novel. He has taken a phase of Australian life which has been rather neglected by local writers, and laid his setting in the slums of Sydney of a few years ago. Mr. Stone knows his subject, and writes with humour and observation, and a great deal of kindliness. His theme is often squalid, and the surroundings often repellent, but the author, without idealising, does not lay undue insistence on the unpleasant." Louis Stone
Louis Stone (21 October 1871 – 23 September 1935) was an Australian novelist and playwright. Early life Stone was born in Leicester, England, baptized as William Lewis, son of William Stone, a basketmaker, and his wife Emma, ''née'' Tewkes. In 1884 the family emigrated to Brisbane, and then a year later, to Redfern in Sydney. He grew up in poverty. His father, who was a marine, was largely absent. Stone qualified as a primary school teacher in 1895 and had temporary teaching positions until he obtained a regular teaching job at Cootamundra. In 1901 Stone was transferred to South Wagga Wagga where he met Thomas Blamey who was influenced by Stone. Writing career Around 1908 Stone married Abigail Allen and also began to write a novel ''Jonah'', published in London in 1911. According to Geoffrey Dutton, Stone was intimately familiar with the setting for Jonah, spending time in Waterloo and Paddy's Market, studying the local larrikins and their speech. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is the national broadcaster of Australia. It is principally funded by direct grants from the Australian Government and is administered by a government-appointed board. It is based on the 1911 novel ''Jonah'' by Australian writer Louis Stone. Set in the inner suburbs of Sydney in the thirty years prior to World War I, the musical is an ironic story of the capitalist rise of a hunchback shoe repairer from a leader of a local Push to an industrial magnate. The musical was commissioned by the Sydney Theatre Company and first produced in 1985 after having been in development for six years. John Romeril
John Henry Romeril (born 1945) is an Australian playwright and teacher. He has written around 60 plays for theatre, film, radio, and television, and is known for his 1975 play ''The Floating World''. Early life and education John Henry Romeril was born in 1945 and grew up in Melbourne, living in Moorabbin until 1966. He attended Bentleigh West State School, Brighton Tech., and Brighton High Schools, and then undertook a BA at Monash University, graduating in 1970 with majors in English Literature and Politics. Career Over the course of his career, Romeril wrote plays for theatre, film, radio, and television, including stage, musicals, puppet theatre, pantomimes, and street theatre. Alan John (born 7 May 1958 in Sydney) is an Australian composer. He studied music at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1980. His compositions include original music for various plays, films (such as '' Holding the Man'', ''Three Dollars'' and '' The Bank'') and TV series (including ''Love My Way''), and the musicals ''Jonah Jones'', ''Orlando Rourke'' and ''Snugglepot and Cuddlepie''.
