''Charade'' is a 1984 Canadian animated film directed by John Minnis. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 57th Academy Awards. The film was animated by Minnis with Pantone markers on paper, during a single three-month summer term at Sheridan College. Plot In front of a witless audience, a talented but unlucky gentleman competes in a game of charades against a savant who puts no effort to it and yet the audience still gets his right. The Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film is an award given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as part of the annual Academy Awards, or Oscars, since the 5th Academy Awards (with different names), covering the year 1931–32, to the present. From 1932 until 1970, the category was known as Short Subjects, Cartoons; and from 1971 to 1973 as Short Subjects, Animated Films. The present title began with the 46th Awards in 1974. During the first 5 decades of the award's existence, awards were presented to the producers of the shorts. Current Academy rules, however, call for the award to be presented to "the individual person most directly responsible for the concept and the creative execution of the film." The 57th Academy Awards were presented March 25, 1985, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. Jack Lemmon presided over the ceremonies. This ceremony marked the first time that multiple black nominees would win an Oscar, when Prince and Stevie Wonder won for their respective work on '' Purple Rain'' and '' The Woman in Red''. Additionally, it was the only time that all five nominees in Best Original Song topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. ''Amadeus'' won eight awards, including Best Picture. Genie Award
The Genie Awards were given out annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to recognize the best of Canadian cinema from 1980–2012. They succeeded the Canadian Film Awards (1949–1978; also known as the "Etrog Awards," for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed the statuette). Genie Award candidates were selected from submissions made by the owners of Canadian films or their representatives, based on the criteria laid out in the ''Genie Rules and Regulations'' booklet which is distributed to Academy members and industry members. Peer-group juries, assembled from volunteer members of the Academy, meet to screen the submissions and select a group of nominees. Academy members then vote on these nominations. 6th Genie Awards
The 6th Genie Awards were held on March 21, 1985, to honour achievements in Canadian cinema in 1984. It was the first time the Genies were broadcast live across Canada by CBC Television, and they drew 1.9 million viewers. The event, held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, was cohosted by Al Waxman and Kerrie Keane. Only four films were nominated for Best Motion Picture this year; two additional films had tied in the voting for the fifth spot, and the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television opted to nominate only four films rather than extending the category to six nominees.
