Johnson Barn (Fayetteville, Arkansas)
The Johnson Barn is a historic barn in rural Washington County, Arkansas, southwest of the city of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Fayetteville. It is located in an agricultural area north of County Road 202 and west of Arkansas Highway 265 (Cato Springs Road). The barn was designed by Benjamin F. Johnson III, who had studied landscape architecture at Harvard University, and was designed after studying barns throughout the region to accumulate best practices in barn design into a single structure. The barn was built in 1933 and used by the family until the 1970s. Notable features include its comparatively large size, hinged loft doors, separate cattle entrances, truss-supported roof, hay hood, and lack of interior supports. The barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Fayetteville () is the second-largest city in Arkansas, the county seat of Washington County, and the biggest city in Northwest Arkansas. Highway 265 (AR 265, Ark. 265, Hwy. 265, and the Dick Trammel Highway) is a designation for three state highways in Northwest Arkansas. The southern segment of runs from Highway 170 near Strickler north to I-49/US 71/ Highway 112 in south Fayetteville. A hay hood is a roof extension which projects from the ridge of a barn roof, usually at the top of a gable. It provides shelter over a window or door used for passing hay into the attic or loft of the barn; it may hold a pulley for hoisting hay or hay bales up to the loft, or a fork or grapple and track system (or hay carrier) where hay can be lifted and then moved throughout the barn.
