Johnson-Portis House
The Johnson-Portis House is a historic house at 400 Avalon Street in West Memphis, Arkansas. Built 1936–38, it is a prominent local example of Tudor Revival architecture, designed by architects George Mahan Jr. and Everett Woods. It has a steeply pitched roof with half-timbered gables, and small-paned windows, all hallmarks of the style, and is set on an estate property landscaped by Highberger and Park. The property was developed for J.C. Johnson, a local judge. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. West Memphis, Arkansas
West Memphis is the largest city in Crittenden County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 26,245 at the 2010 census, ranking it as the state's 18th largest city, behind Bella Vista. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area, and is located directly across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee. History Pre-European habitation Native Americans lived in the Mississippi River Valley for at least 10,000 years, although much of the evidence of their presence has been buried or destroyed. Tudor Revival Architecture
Tudor Revival architecture (also known as mock Tudor in the UK) first manifested itself in domestic architecture in the United Kingdom in the latter half of the 19th century. Based on revival of aspects that were perceived as Tudor architecture, in reality it usually took the style of English vernacular architecture of the Middle Ages that had survived into the Tudor period. The style later became an influence elsewhere, especially the British colonies. For example, in New Zealand, the architect Francis Petre adapted the style for the local climate. In Singapore, then a British colony, architects such as R. A. J. Bidwell pioneered what became known as the Black and White House. Everett Woods
Everett Dedman Woods was an architect based in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the younger brother of fellow architect Neander Woods Jr. The Coca-Cola bottling plant he designed in Covington, Tennessee is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a residence he built in Memphis became corporate headquarters for Harrah's Entertainment. He also designed East High School in Memphis. He worked with George Mahan Jr. designing residences for many prominent citizens before establishing his own firm in 1930. One of his designs, Poplar Plaza, was the first shopping center in Memphis and, according to a planning official in Memphis, the first shopping center in the United States designed for the automobile. John B. Goodwin was the developer. East High School was the largest and finest school in Memphis history when it was built and was the city's first integrated high school.
