Johnson, Indiana
Johnson is an unincorporated town and Census designated place in Montgomery Township, Gibson County, Indiana, United States. It is located roughly four miles west of Owensville and eight miles north of Poseyville. History A post office was established at Johnson in 1914, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1930. The community was named for Mr. Johnson, a railroad official. The original site was just one of many villages for the Native American tribe of Piankeshaw. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and location information about more than two million physical and cultural features, encompassing the United States and its territories; the Compact of Free Association, associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau; and Antarctica. Piankeshaw
The Piankeshaw, Piankashaw or Pianguichia were members of the Miami tribe who lived apart from the rest of the Miami nation, therefore they were known as Peeyankihšiaki ("splitting off" from the others, Sing.: ''Peeyankihšia'' - "Piankeshaw Person"). When European settlers arrived in the region in the 1600s, the Piankeshaw lived in an area along the south central Wabash River that now includes western Indiana and Illinois. Their territory was to the north of Kickapoo, Indiana, Kickapoo (around Vincennes, Indiana, Vincennes) and the south of the Wea (centered on Ouiatenon). History The town of Poseyville was originally called Palestine when the town was first surveyed and laid out by James Smith on February 28, 1840. The town was set up along the New Harmony-Princeton coach line. The new town was recorded at the Posey County Recorder's Office on November 20, 1840. Palestine was renamed Poseyville when the town got its first post office on February 10, 1843, due to another town named Palestine, Indiana, which already had a post office. The name was officially approved and changed by the Indiana State Legislature on December 26, 1844, but did not get recorded locally. Owensville, Indiana
Owensville is the third largest town and the smallest of the five larger communities in Gibson County, Indiana, Gibson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,338 in 2020. History Owensville was established in 1817 by Phillip Briscoe, when he filed the town plat consisting of 52 parcels and five out-parcels. A fire in 1876 destroyed many of the wood framed businesses on the eastern side of the town square. It was not until 1881 that Owensville incorporated. On March 18, 1925, the Tri-State Tornado struck just northwest of the town, killing nine people. Montgomery Township, Gibson County, Indiana
Montgomery Township is the largest (in area) of the ten townships in Gibson County, Indiana as well as one of the largest townships by area in Southwestern Indiana, USA. At the 2020 census, its population was 4,020 (up from 3,996 in 2010) and it contained 1,624 housing units, 75% of which were in areas adjacent to Owensville. Montgomery Township is served by the South Gibson School Corporation. Gibson Generating Station and Gibson Lake are located at the northern end of Montgomery Township. Geography According to the 2010 census, the township had a total area of , of which (or 94.28%) is land and (or 5.72%) is water.
