Johnny Mayes
Johnny Mayes (born 29 April 1947) is an Australian former rugby league halfback who represented Australia in the 1975 World Cup. He also played in three consecutive premiership-winning teams from 1973 to 1975, the first for Manly-Warringah and the latter two for Eastern Suburbs. His feat of playing in three consecutive premiership sides for different clubs is comparable only with Glenn Lazarus in the early 1990s for Canberra and the Brisbane Broncos, who played in four premiership sides between 1989 and 1993. Penrith Panthers
The Penrith Panthers are an Australian professional rugby league football club based in the western Sydney suburb of Penrith that competes in the NRL. The team is based west of the centre of Sydney, at the foot of the Blue Mountains. Penrith are the current reigning NRL Premiers, having won the title four times. The 1974–75 Rugby Football League season was the 80th season of competition between the clubs of England's Northern Rugby Football League. 1976 World Club Challenge
The 1976 World Club Challenge was an unofficial trial of what would later become the World Club Challenge concept, with the 1975 NSWRFL season's premiers, Eastern Suburbs hosting the 1975–76 Northern Rugby Football League season's Premiership and Challenge Cup winners St. Helens. The one-off challenge match was played on 29 June, right in the middle of the 1976 NSWRFL season, at the Sydney Cricket Ground before a crowd of 26,856. The next game of its kind would not be played until 1987. Background The game was the first of its type, and was the last to be played in Australia until 1994. Kevin Hastings
Kevin "Horrie" Hastings (born 5 January 1957) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played as a and during the 1970s and 1980s. Hastings played for the Eastern Suburbs in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL), making 239 appearances for the club from his debut 1976 until his last match in 1987. He has been described as a stalwart of the club, and has won numerous individual accolades, including the Rothmans Medal (1981) and was Dally M Halfback of the Year for three consecutive years (1980, 1981 and 1982). The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are an Australian professional rugby league football club based in Belmore, a suburb in the Canterbury-Bankstown region of Sydney. Bruce Pickett
Bruce Pickett is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s. He played for Eastern Suburbs and Newtown in the New South Wales Rugby League competition. Playing career A Newtown junior, Pickett made his first grade debut for Newtown in 1973. Under the coaching of Jack Gibson, Newtown finished 4th in 1973. Pickett played in all of Newtown's finals matches as the club fell short of a grand final appearance losing to Cronulla-Sutherland in the preliminary final. In 1974, Pickett departed the club and signed with Easts at the same time that Jack Gibson was announced as their new coach. Pickett missed out on playing in the club's 1974 premiership winning team which defeated Canterbury in the grand final. Jack Gibson (rugby League)
Jack Gibson OAM (27 February 1929 – 9 May 2008) was an Australian rugby league coach, player, and commentator. He is widely considered one of the greatest coaches in the sport's history. Nicknamed 'Supercoach', he was highly regarded not only for his coaching record but also for his thirst for innovation, as he introduced new coaching and training methods into the sport in the 1970s, and 1980s, when first-grade rugby league was then still played and coached on a semi-professional basis.
