Johnny Gordon
John Duncan Sinclair Gordon (11 September 1931 – 26 May 2001) was an English professional association football, footballer who played for Portsmouth F.C., Portsmouth and Birmingham City F.C., Birmingham City in the Football League First Division, First Division as an inside forward. He made a total of 489 appearances for home-town club Portsmouth, placing him fourth in their all-time appearances list. During his three seasons at Birmingham City he was the club's top scorer in 1959–60 Birmingham City F.C. season, 1959–60, became their all-time top goalscorer in European competition, and played in the 1960 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final against FC Barcelona, Barcelona. The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, sometimes referred to as the European Fairs Cup, Fairs Cities' Cup, or simply as the Fairs Cup, was a European Association football, football competition played between 1955 and 1971. The 1961–62 season was the 82nd season of competitive Football in England. Overview The season was notable for the remarkable achievement of Ipswich Town winning the League Championship. Under the managership of Alf Ramsey, the club progressed from the old Third Division South to the First Division. Ipswich were dismissed by most of the media at the time as relegation candidates, but Ramsey's tactics baffled the big clubs in the division such as favourites Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley, and other big names such as Manchester United and Arsenal. 1960 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final
The 1960 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final was an association football match played over two legs between Barcelona of Spain and Birmingham City of England. The first leg was played at St Andrew's, Birmingham, on 29 March 1960, and the second leg was played on 4 May at the Camp Nou, Barcelona. It was the final of the second edition of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, an invitational competition open to teams representing host cities of industrial trade fairs. Birmingham were the first English club side to appear in a European final. Barcelona had beaten the London XI in the inaugural final in 1958, having needed a replay to eliminate Birmingham in the semi-final.
