Johnny A. Johnson
John Arthur Johnson (born September 26, 1915), nicknamed "Long John", is an American former Negro league pitcher who played between 1938 and 1946. A native of De Soto Parish, Louisiana, Johnson made his Negro leagues debut in 1938 with the Newark Eagles. He played for the Baltimore Elite Giants the following season, and went on to play for the Homestead Grays during their 1944 Negro World Series championship season. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. In the 1944 Negro World Series, the Washington Homestead Grays, champions of the Negro National League were matched against the Birmingham Black Barons, champions of the Negro American League, for the second year in a row.
